This week, our Policy Officer Filip Karan attended the Patient Engagement Open Forum (PEOF) in Seville 🇪🇸, a global gathering dedicated to advancing meaningful patient engagement across healthcare, research, policy, and innovation.

Bringing together patients, policymakers, researchers, healthcare professionals, regulators, industry representatives, and civil society organisations from around the world, PEOF provides a unique space to exchange ideas on strengthening patient partnerships and ensuring that healthcare systems better reflect the needs and experiences of those they serve.

A central theme throughout the forum was how to place patients at the heart of healthcare decision-making. Discussions explored how patient experience and lived experience can help shape health technology assessment, inform the use of health data and real-world evidence, guide the development of digital health and AI solutions, and improve access to innovation and clinical research.

As healthcare systems continue to evolve, meaningful patient involvement is no longer a "nice-to-have"; it is essential for delivering more responsive, equitable, and sustainable healthcare. DiCE is proud to contribute to these conversations and to champion the role of patients as partners in shaping the future of health.

Our CEO, Zorana Maravic, and Project Officer, Nikola Mihinjač, attended the Congress of the EASL - The Home of Hepatology, not as scientists or nurses, but as patient advocates raising awareness about Liver Cancer and championing the voice of patients.

It was particularly encouraging to see EASL bringing patient representatives into this conference. Patients and families should not be occasional guests in healthcare conversations; they should be recognised as essential partners in shaping research, care pathways, innovation, and policy.

During the congress, Zorana also chaired an important discussion on the early inclusion of patients in clinical trials, bringing together an outstanding panel of patient advocates, researchers, healthcare professionals, and patients. The session highlighted the value of bringing patient perspectives to the table from the very beginning of the research process.

As we look to the future, meaningful patient involvement should not be the exception but the norm. Patients must be engaged early, continuously, and throughout the entire lifecycle of a clinical trial to ensure research is truly patient-centred and reflects the needs and priorities of those it aims to serve.

Liver health must become a much higher public health priority, particularly when it comes to liver cancer. Together, we can drive greater awareness, earlier diagnosis, better care, and improved outcomes for everyone affected.

Held alongside GI 2026, the Masterclass will explore the latest in care, research, advocacy, and innovation, while keeping patient voices at the centre. And beyond the sessions, it’s a chance to reconnect, share ideas, and build the partnerships that help turn conversations into action.

Preparing in the Japanese Garden in Brussels for the fun run in Munich, where people from across 💶 are coming together to raise awareness for digestive cancers.

For me, this turned into something deeply personal.

Honestly, I have never really been a runner and after Whipple surgery impacted my overall muscle strength, I convinced myself that I could never run again really because it would be too hard on my body, too exhausting and simply not for me anymore.

I continued exercising, practicing yoga, and staying active — but somewhere in my mind, I had already written the story: “Running is no longer possible for me.”

But after 5 years, this fun run became an opportunity to challenge that narrative. And I realized something important: many of the limits we carry are sometimes built not only from the body, but also from the stories we absorb — symptoms we hear about, fears, expectations, and what we begin to believe is possible or impossible for us.

So, 3 weeks ago, I started training – slowly and gently taking small baby steps at a time, and it’s going better every day. A big thank you .europe for this fun yet impactful opportunity and for their 8-week plan and guidance all along the way.

And most importantly, thanks to hubby (apparently the better runner 😏) for not just joining me, but supporting me, staying beside my frustratingly slower pace — while I patiently bear his non-stop instructions. That, I guess, is partnership and teamwork. 😉

While I deeply respect my body’s needs, I also know my body is loving this thrill, this gentle push, this movement, the sweat and the larger cause behind it all.

A reminder that we are often far more powerful than we think.

As the ESMO - European Society for Medical Oncology presidential election enters its final week, Digestive Cancers Europe acknowledges Professor Florian Lordick, MD, FESMO’s longstanding commitment to collaborative, patient-centred oncology.

A recent example was his participation in the DiCE ENTERO conference, where he joined specialists, researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and patient advocates to tackle the growing challenge of early-onset digestive cancers. The focus was on raising awareness of gastroesophageal cancers, especially regarding prevention, risk factors, and early detection.

Professor Lordick’s emphasis on meaningful patient involvement, innovation that reaches all patients, and stronger collaboration across oncology continues to resonate strongly with the priorities of the digestive cancer community. His engagement with patient organisations reflects the kind of open, multidisciplinary dialogue needed to shape more responsive and patient-centred cancer care.
