-----------------------------------------------------------
Ibn al-Haytham (Al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham) is regarded as one of the greatest polymath scholars of the Islamic Golden Age and one of the most influential scientific figures in human history. He is widely considered the true founder of modern optics, earning him the title: “The Father of Modern Optics.”
“The duty of the man who investigates the writings of scientists, if learning the truth is his goal, is to make himself the enemy of all that he reads.” Ibn al-Haytham
Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham, known in medieval Europe as “Alhazen,” was born in Basra around 965 CE. Raised in an intellectually vibrant environment, he developed deep expertise in mathematics, physics, astronomy, philosophy, and engineering. Due to his exceptional scientific achievements, some scholars of the Islamic world referred to him as the “Second Ptolemy.”
Ibn al-Haytham was not merely a theoretical thinker; he was among the earliest scientists to systematically employ experimental methods based on observation, testing, verification, and reproducibility. For this reason, many historians of science consider him one of the pioneers of the modern scientific method centuries before the European Renaissance.
al-Haytham and the Scientific Centers of His Time
During his life, Ibn al-Haytham moved from Basra to Cairo following an invitation from the Fatimid Caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (985–1021 CE), who was known for supporting scholars and scientific activity. At the time, Cairo flourished as a center of learning, particularly through institutions such as the “Dar al-Hikma” (House of Wisdom), one of the greatest libraries and scientific academies in the Islamic world.
Historical accounts also mention that Ibn al-Haytham proposed an ambitious engineering project to regulate the flooding of the Nile River. However, after careful study of the region and its technical limitations, he concluded that such a project was impossible with the available technologies of his era, demonstrating his scientific honesty and intellectual rigor.

Ibn al-Haytham’s masterpiece, **Kitab al-Manazir (The Book of Optics)**, is considered one of the most influential scientific works in the history of physics and optics. The book was translated into Latin during the 12th century and later influenced major European scientists such as:
* Roger Bacon
* Johannes Kepler
* Leonardo da Vinci
* Isaac Newton
In this groundbreaking work, Ibn al-Haytham refuted the ancient Greek emission theory of vision, which claimed that the eyes emit rays toward objects. Instead, he experimentally demonstrated that vision occurs when light reflected from objects enters the eye.
His studies also covered:
* Reflection and refraction of light
* Formation of shadows
* Mirrors and lenses
* The nature of colors
* Rainbows
* Moonlight and atmospheric halos
* The Camera Obscura
Through these investigations, Ibn al-Haytham established the physical and mathematical foundations upon which modern optics, imaging science, and lens technology were later built.
1. Kitab al-Manazir (The Book of Optics)
His most famous and influential work, in which he established the scientific foundations of optics and explored light, vision, reflection, refraction, and experimental methodology.
2. Burning Mirrors
A study on concave mirrors and the concentration of light and thermal energy.
3. The Image of the Eclipse
A scientific explanation of eclipses and related astronomical phenomena.
4. The Motion of the Moon & The Apparent Shape of the Moon
Works discussing lunar motion and observational astronomy.
5. Revision of the Almagest
A critical mathematical analysis and revision of Ptolemaic astronomy.
Some of His Other Works
* On the Configuration of the World
* On Shadows
* Euclid’s Postulates
* Squaring the Circle
* Principles of Measurement
* The Structure of the Heavens
* On the Light of the Stars
* On Celestial Observation Errors
* Treatises on Geometry and Number Theory
* Sundials and Time Measurement

What distinguishes Ibn al-Haytham is not only the breadth of his writings, but also the rigor of his scientific methodology. He emphasized:
* Systematic scientific skepticism
* Experimentation and measurement
* Mathematical proof
* Precise observation
* Critical evaluation of established ideas
For this reason, he is recognized as one of the earliest architects of experimental scientific thinking.
Ibn al-Haytham died in Cairo around 1040 CE, leaving behind a monumental scientific legacy whose influence continues to shape physics, optics, engineering, astronomy, and the philosophy of science to this day.

* روجر بيكون
* يوهانس كبلر
* ليوناردو دا فينشي
* إسحاق نيوتن
#كما درس:
* انعكاس الضوء وانكساره
* تكوّن الظلال
* العدسات والمرايا
* ألوان الطيف
* قوس قزح
* ضوء القمر والهالة الضوئية
* الكاميرا المظلمة (Camera Obscura)

* الشك العلمي المنهجي
* التجربة والقياس
* البرهان الرياضي
* الملاحظة الدقيقة
* نقد الأفكار السائدة
