Fashion Revolution Day 24 April
www.fashionrevolution.org

Revolutionise the Fashion Industry with us! On 24 April 2013, 1138 people were killed and 2500 injured when the Rana Plaza factory complex collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We believe 1138 is too many people to lose from the planet in one factory, on one terrible day, without that leading to revolutionary change i

n the fashion industry. The Rana Plaza was a metaphorical call to arms. The textile industry is widely regarded as a major contributor to global pollution but, according to research by Deloitte, 2 in 3 fashion companies are not focused on engaging consumers with regard to sustainability. According to the Australian Fashion Report in 2013 , 61% of companies surveyed didn’t know where their garments were made. So we have created Fashion Revolution Week: a week of activities around the world to demand a fairer, cleaner, more transparent and more beautiful fashion industry. With one simple question: 'Who Made Your Clothes?' we’re asking everyone who’s taking part in Fashion Revolution Week to be curious, find out, do something about it. Read the manifesto and make it your own. Think Global, Act Local. We visited one of the swap initiatives, and here are some photos. 💚♻️🧶

Clothing Loop is a community-based clothing swap initiative that makes it easy to exchange second-hand clothes with people in your neighborhood through a circulating “chain” system. Instead of buying new items, participants pass along clothing they no longer use, keeping garments in circulation for longer and reducing waste.

“The Clothing Loop is a chain clothing swap, an initiative that makes it easy to exchange clothes with people in your neighborhood,” explain Alana Hurkens and Inez Vaes from The Clothing Loop. “The idea originated a few years ago with a group of women in Amsterdam.

Meanwhile, there are more than sixty groups active in Belgium, including in Hasselt and Beringen. During our swap events, everyone can get acquainted with our Clothing Loops.”

The initiative responds to growing concerns about textile waste and overconsumption. In Belgium, the average person buys around 19 kg of clothing per year, of which approximately 16 kg ends up as waste; much of it incinerated rather than recycled. At the same time, fast-fashion platforms such as Shein and Temu contribute to increasing environmental pressure.

The concept promotes a simple alternative to this cycle: instead of continuously buying and discarding clothes, people are encouraged to swap, reuse, and extend the life of existing garments.

In addition, the event also features on-site repair stations for clothing and electronics, available throughout the day, allowing participants to fix and extend the lifespan of items directly during the swap.

🇬🇧🇧🇪 Throwback to “Mend in Public Day” in Brussels during Fashion Revolution Week. Beautifully organised by .sam ♻️🪡✨

An afternoon of stitching, sharing stories, learning new skills and giving our clothes a second life; all while rethinking the true cost of fashion.

Such a beautiful reminder that caring for what we already own can also be an act of community, creativity and activism 💚

🇧🇪🇳🇱 Throwback naar “Mend in Public Day” in Brussel tijdens Fashion Revolution Week.

A look back at the Weaving Workshop at ECRU during Fashion Revolution Week — Antwerp 🧶✨

Led by Sharifa, the workshop brought together creativity, craftsmanship, and conscious fashion, where participants worked with natural cotton and recycled paper looms to explore the fundamentals of weaving.

The process was simple and methodical: up and down, thread by thread, building rhythm, structure, and pattern through repetition. 👚🪡

The workshop focused on learning through making, where attention to small movements shaped the development of emerging textile forms.

The group also visited two neighbouring studios. At Stephanie Schiedner Atelier, weaving techniques are applied in silver jewellery design and sculptural work. At the workspace of Lamine Diouf, contemporary weaving practices engage with natural materials and Senegalese traditional influences.

Three journalists from Stamp Media attended the workshop and documented the process as it unfolded.

Supported by the Stad Antwerpen Burgerbegroting initiative.

🇧🇪 🇬🇧 Bildy Markt working as a collective of art and craft makers, linking with What We Will, an artist collective exploring wool felting and communal rituals.

A kindred collective moment we found along the way during our Fashion Revolution Week journey this April.

Reclaiming making as resistance, centering care, community and slower, conscious practices. Threads, hands and shared intentions coming together. .✊🧶🧡
