We had a super fun workshop over the past week in the Rohingya camp, where children used clay to create creatures from their imaginations!

We began by exploring fantastical characters-from mythology and superheroes to cartoons. Then, each participant invented their own unique character, complete with a name, an origin story, and a superpower. The highlight was bringing these characters to life, especially since many of the children had never played with modeling clay or Play-Doh before.

Somira Afa, a teacher from Save the Children, shared:

"In the midst of so many challenges, we often forget to smile and connect with our inner creativity. Programs like this help us rediscover who we are, giving us a reason to smile again and the strength to restart life.

Thank you so much, Joel, for spending time with us and introducing new forms of art. It has been truly impactful and very child-friendly, helping us engage children in meaningful ways. You will see the lasting impact of your presence with us. On behalf of the team, I wish you a safe journey home and a joyful time with your family.

Children created their favorite characters using clay and made stop-motion videos on tablets themselves. It was really fun and joyful. Thank you, , for introducing this new form of art!

Our art isn’t meant to be perfect—it’s about how you feel at the moment.
A joyful day where community artists and children enjoyed playing with colors at the "Rohingya Center" of DRC in Camp 10.

We had a super fun workshop today in the Rohingya camp using clay to create creatures from the kids imaginations! 🤩

First, we explored the concept of fantastical characters, from mythology to superheroes to cartoons. Then, each participant invented their own unique character with an origin story, name and superpower. The highlight was bringing their characters to life, especially as these kids have never played with any kind of modeling clay or Play-Doh in their lives.

One of my missions while here is to introduce new activities and materials to our 18 teaching artists, who can then add them to their curriculum. These inspirational Rohingya artists work tirelessly year-round with the young people in their community.
