BCWS leaders were imprisoned on false charges relating to the protests. They were beaten while in custody and in one case tortured, then beaten unconscious.

Highly regarded by labor rights advocates world-wide, BCWS was founded (2001) by 3 former garment workers, including former child laborer, Kalpona Akter (the executive director) BCWS formed the 1st trade union in a factory sourcing for a garment retailer. As part of a crackdown on workers rights, the Government of Bangladesh stripped BCWS of their legal NGO status, seized their office equipment an

d ordered their bank manager to close their foreign donations bank account. These labour leaders are now out on bail but face a number of false charges with sentences up to and including the death penalty. Since the early 1990s, the BCWS has had a long tradition of advancing workers’ rights by documenting labor abuses and violations and strengthening the capacity of workers to advocate for themselves and advance their own interests. BCWS is highly regarded by labor rights advocates world-wide and by apparel companies as well. Levi Strauss
& Co. has called BCWS “a globally respected labor rights organization, which has played a vital role in documenting and working to remedy labor violations in the apparel industry in Bangladesh.”
