Happy World Turtle Day!
Today is World Turtle Day! These gentle creatures play a massive role in maintaining the balance of our nature and wetlands. Many of us might not know that a turtle's shell isn't just an external house or cover—it is actually a part of their skeleton, fused right into their spine and ribs! Another fascinating fact is that the temperature of the surroundings during incubation determines whether the turtle hatchlings will be male or female. They have been surviving on Earth for over 200 million years, which is truly incredible.
Right here in Bangladesh, we are home to some wonderful and rare species of turtles. For instance, the famous Bostami Turtle found in the pond of the Bayazid Bostami shrine in Chittagong is deeply intertwined with our local culture. Then there is the Northern River Terrapin (Sona Kachim) of the Sundarbans, which is now one of the most critically endangered species in the world, and active efforts are underway to save them. Additionally, beautiful Olive Ridley sea turtles visit the sandy beaches of St. Martin's and Cox's Bazar every winter to lay their eggs.
Unfortunately, due to plastic pollution and a lack of awareness, these beautiful creatures are facing severe threats today. Keeping our rivers, canals, and oceans clean is our collective responsibility because when nature thrives, we all thrive. Let's raise awareness together! 🌊
আজ বিশ্ব কচ্ছপ দিবস। প্রকৃতি আর আমাদের জলাভূমির ভারসাম্য ধরে রাখতে এই শান্ত প্রাণীগুলোর অবদান অনেক। আমরা হয়তো অনেকেই জানি না যে কচ্ছপের খোলস কিন্তু আলাদা কোনো বাড়ি বা আবরণ নয়, এটি মূলত ওদের মেরুদণ্ড আর পাঁজরের হাড়ের সাথে জোড়া লাগানো কঙ্কালেরই একটা অংশ। আরেকটা মজার ব্যাপার হলো, ডিম ফোটার সময় চারপাশের তাপমাত্রা কেমন থাকে—তার ওপর নির্ভর করে কচ্ছপের বাচ্চাগুলো ছেলে হবে নাকি মেয়ে! এরা প্রায় ২০ কোটি বছর ধরে পৃথিবীতে টিকে আছে, যা সত্যিই দারুণ।
আমাদের বাংলাদেশেও কিন্তু বেশ কিছু চমৎকার আর বিরল প্রজাতির কচ্ছপ আছে। যেমন চট্টগ্রামের বায়েজিদ বোস্তামী মাজারের পুকুরে থাকা বিখ্যাত বোস্তামী কচ্ছপ, যা আমাদের সংস্কৃতির সাথেও জড়িয়ে আছে। আবার সুন্দরবনের সোনা কচ্ছপ এখন পৃথিবীর অন্যতম বিপন্ন প্রজাতি, যাদের বাঁচিয়ে রাখার চেষ্টা চলছে। এছাড়া প্রতি শীতে সেন্ট মার্টিন আর কক্সবাজারের সৈকতে ডিম পাড়তে আসে সুন্দর জলপাই রঙের সামুদ্রিক কচ্ছপগুলো।
আমাদের প্লাস্টিক দূষণ আর অসচেতনতার কারণে এই সুন্দর প্রাণীগুলো আজ হুমকির মুখে। আমাদের নদী, খাল আর সমুদ্রকে পরিচ্ছন্ন রাখা আমাদেরই দায়িত্ব, কারণ প্রকৃতি ভালো থাকলেই আমরা সবাই ভালো থাকব। আসুন সচেতনতা বাড়াই। 🌊
