Water is life—but in the coastal belt of Khulna, it is becoming a daily struggle. Rising salinity, frequent cyclones, and climate-induced disruptions have made access to safe drinking water increasingly difficult for vulnerable communities.

GRACE is working at the frontline of this crisis, implementing sustainable and community-driven water management solutions. From rainwater harvesting systems to pond sand filters and awareness campaigns, GRACE is empowering local people—especially women and marginalized groups—to take control of their water security.

In areas where groundwater is too saline to drink, innovative approaches are not just helpful—they are essential. GRACE’s initiatives are helping communities adapt, build resilience, and ensure that no one is left behind in the fight for safe water.

The water crisis in Khulna is not just an environmental issue—it is a human rights issue. Collective action, local leadership, and long-term investment are the keys to a sustainable future.

🌡️ তীব্র গরমে নিরাপদ থাকুন – GRACE এর সচেতনতা বার্তা

উপকূলীয় এলাকায় তাপমাত্রা দিন দিন বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। অতিরিক্ত গরম (Heat Wave) আমাদের স্বাস্থ্য, জীবিকা ও দৈনন্দিন জীবনকে মারাত্মকভাবে প্রভাবিত করতে পারে। তাই এখনই সচেতন হোন, নিরাপদ থাকুন।

🔴 হিট ওয়েভে করণীয়:

* প্রচুর পানি পান করুন, তৃষ্ণা না পেলেও নিয়মিত পানি খান
* দুপুর ১২টা থেকে বিকাল ৪টা পর্যন্ত অপ্রয়োজনে বাইরে যাওয়া এড়িয়ে চলুন
* হালকা, ঢিলেঢালা ও হালকা রঙের পোশাক পরুন
* শিশু, বয়স্ক ও অসুস্থ ব্যক্তিদের বিশেষ যত্ন নিন
* ঘরের ভিতরে ঠান্ডা পরিবেশ বজায় রাখুন (পর্দা, বাতাস চলাচল নিশ্চিত করুন)
* বাইরে গেলে ছাতা/টুপি/গামছা ব্যবহার করুন

⚠️ হিট স্ট্রোকের লক্ষণ:

* মাথা ঘোরা বা অজ্ঞান হয়ে যাওয়া
* অতিরিক্ত ঘাম বা ঘাম বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়া
* শরীর খুব গরম লাগা, বমি বমি ভাব
➡️ এ ধরনের লক্ষণ দেখা দিলে দ্রুত ছায়ায় নিয়ে যান, ঠান্ডা পানি দিন এবং প্রয়োজনে চিকিৎসা নিন।

In the climate vulnerable communities of Khulna City, GRACE is creating safe and inclusive spaces for children from underprivileged and climate-affected households. These platforms nurture understanding, friendship, and confidence, helping children learn not only to read, but to laugh, share, and dream.

Empowering 120 women farmers through Climate Smart Agriculture under Integrated Resilience Program for Coastal Families (IRPCF)Piloating Initiative.

After successfully completing training on homestead nutrient gardening, seasonal seeds (6 varieties) along with ginger have been distributed among 120 women farmers in urban and peri-urban communities of Botiaghata and Khulna city.
GRACE developed Seasonal crop calender was provided all of the Program Participants

This initiative promotes the production and consumption of safe, organic, and nutrient-rich vegetables at the household level. At the same time, it creates opportunities for additional income generation alongside their regular domestic responsibilities.

Urban Rooftop Gardening through Climate-Smart Drip Irrigation and Rainwater Harvesting

Between March and June, acute water scarcity disrupts essential household activities and heightens the vulnerability of urban communities. unsafe dumping of household solid waste. In this context, rooftop gardening emerges as a practical, nature-based solution—cooling urban spaces, clean environment, strengthening climate resilience, and improving access to safe, nutritious food.

In response, GRACE is advancing and a community-driven initiative that engages house owners in adopting rainwater harvesting systems to power efficient drip irrigation. The approach is further strengthened by promoting the use of tenant household organic waste for composting, creating a circular, low-cost, and sustainable model.

This integrated solution not only addresses seasonal water stress but also contributes to greener cities, reduced urban heat, healthy food production and resilient livelihoods—offering a scalable pathway for climate adaptation in water-stressed urban areas.

Addressing Water Crisis in Coastal Khulna, Bangladesh

In coastal Khulna, Bangladesh, salinity intrusion and water scarcity reach critical levels every year from February to May. Over the past nine years, groundwater levels have dropped by nearly 13 feet, leaving pipelines and tube wells largely inactive during this dry season.

As a result, thousands of families especially in Khulna city struggle to access safe water for daily household use. The burden is highest for vulnerable communities living in extreme poverty.

To respond to this growing crisis, GRACE (Green Resilience and Cooperation for Ecosystem) has introduced a locally-led rainwater harvesting solution. These simple, community-friendly water storage pots are designed to ensure access to safe water for domestic use during the most critical months.

Currently, this initiative is being piloted across 200 vulnerable households, providing a practical and sustainable alternative where conventional water sources fail.

This pilot is not just a short-term response it is a pathway toward scaling up. GRACE aims to expand this solution to more extreme-poor households, including urban slum communities, ensuring no family is left behind in accessing safe water.

Rainwater-powered farming is transforming sand-covered land in southwest Khulna into a productive, climate-resilient model of agriculture 🌱💧

From February 2025 to March 2026, a total of 9 decimals of land produced approximately 2.7 tons of high-value vegetables, generating an estimated income of BDT 85,000 within one year. All produce is 100% organic, and with improved business and market linkages, the value could increase even further.

This initiative also serves as a community training and learning hub, engaging local farmers and youth. The site focuses on:
• Testing high-quality saplings
• Producing tricho-compost and vermicompost
• Exploring high-yield, saline-tolerant crop varieties suitable for coastal areas
• Promoting bio-pesticide use for safe and sustainable farming
