ulation better prepare against the impacts of both climatic and non-climatic factors. It has been working in this region for about 20 years to build a sustainable resilient coastal community with the supports of various donors including European Union (EU), GIZ, JICA. Background
Climate change has posed a formidable challenge for coastal countries. Bangladesh being a deltaic coastal country is one of the worst victim of the impacts of climate change. Khulna region, located at the south-west corner of coastal Bangladesh is frequently ravaged multiplicity of hydro-meteorological disaster such as coastal flooding, cyclones, tidal surges, salinity intrusion. Scientific evidences has established a link between likely rise of seas level and submersion of vast areas of south-west coast in Bangladesh. Therefore, livelihood of more than 35 million coastal populations who are dependent on coastal resources is in constant threat. Any pragmatic initiatives to respond against the impacts of these disastrous events would require solid information on how the coastal hydrology, soil, land use would be affected in the changing context of climate. Furthermore, to make such initiatives more participatory knowing how peoples are currently responding against these climatic disasters is an urgent issue. Therefore, JJS being a leading development NGO in the South-west coastal regions have been organizing a conference series on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation since 2012. This year the theme of the conference is Climate Change Impacts & Adaptation in South-west Coastal Bangladesh.

The 4th Annual Coastal Children’s Climate Conference, held on April 27–28, 2025, in Khulna City, emerged as a landmark platform to amplify the voices of more than 4,560 coastal children from Bangladesh’s most climate-vulnerable coastal upazilas of Khulna, Bagerhat & Satkhira Districts. Organized by Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS) and the Coastal Children’s Forum on Climate Change and DRR, with support from German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Kindernothilfe (KNH)–Germany, the two-day conference brought together 350 stakeholders, including children, coastal community representatives, policymakers, academicians, researchers, journalist and civil society representatives. It showcased how children are not just passive victims of climate change—but informed, determined leaders advocating for transformative policy solutions. By facilitating meaningful participation, this event prioritizes children’s rights, amplify their capacities, and provide a platform for leadership. The message was clear and compelling: children are not just tomorrow’s leaders—they are already leading today.
