🌍 Strengthening Resilience Through Skills, Dignity, and Opportunity 🌱
On 18 May 2026, under the Loss and Damage Special Initiative, JJS organized a significant programme titled “Addressing Non-Economic Losses: Evaluating Project Interventions and Cash Distribution Among On-the-Job Training Participants” at the Shaheed Altaf Auditorium, Khulna City Corporation, Khulna.
The initiative focuses on climate-induced migrant communities who relocated to different slum areas of Khulna after devastating cyclones and continue to face exclusion from essential civic services, employment opportunities, and social security. Beyond economic hardship, these communities also experience profound non-economic losses, including social insecurity, loss of dignity, limited mobility, and reduced opportunities for growth.
During the program, 25 migrant participants who successfully completed 90 days of skill development training in driving, sales representation, beautification, computer skills, and fashion design received demo cheques worth BDT 27,000 each through the hands of the Chief Guest, Nazrul Islam Monju, Administrator, Khulna City Corporation.
The event highlighted how JJS has been working closely with vulnerable slum dwellers over the past one and half years to build confidence, strengthen self-reliance, and support sustainable urban livelihoods. Participants were also engaged in identifying and ranking the non-economic losses affecting their lives, which were later reviewed through stakeholder consultations and expert of guidance. A presentation session by Md. Sohel Rana Research & Learning Coordinator showcased the project’s achievements, including innovative game-based learning activities designed to help participants better understand non-economic losses and resilience-building approaches. Previously, 44 participants received similar support during the first year of the project, while this year till now another 25 participants successfully completed their training and received assistance.
Chief Guest Nazrul Islam Monju highly appreciated the initiative and emphasized the importance of women’s empowerment and economic inclusion. He also mentioned future opportunities for recruiting women drivers and expanding market access for women entrepreneurs. Suriya Siddiqa, Deputy Director, Department of Women Affairs Khulna and Rezbina Khanam, Architect, Khulna City Corporation, also praised the initiative and encouraged women to move forward with confidence, self-dependence, and leadership.
JJS remains committed to supporting climate-affected communities through skills transformation, empowerment, and inclusive opportunities that help restore both livelihoods and dignity.

🛠️ Transforming Skills, Creating Opportunities for Climate Migrants 🌿

On 17 May 2026, JJS, with the support of CJRF under the Loss and Damage Special Initiative Project, organized an engaging discussion session on the Climate Migrants Skill Transformation Initiative. The initiative aims to connect climate-displaced women and young girls with sustainable employment opportunities.

The initiative focuses on transforming the lives of climate-affected migrant women and young girls through practical, market-oriented skills development and hands-on learning opportunities. What makes this initiative unique is the involvement of experienced Ustads (master trainers and business owners) who are already successfully operating their own enterprises and providing real workplace-based training.

The discussion brought together trainers, facilitators, and project staff to strengthen the future direction of the On-Job Training initiative. The session was facilitated by the leadership team of JJS, including discussions on the responsibilities of trainers in transforming the skills and confidence of migrant women and girls, identifying employment opportunities, and ensuring long-term sustainability through private sector engagement.

Through this initiative, climate-displaced participants are receiving practical training in high-demand trades, including:
✔ Sales Representative
✔ Fashion Design
✔ Computer Skills
✔ Baking and Pastry
✔ Beautification
✔ Driving

The Ustads are not only sharing technical knowledge but also mentoring participants with real business experience, helping them understand workplace culture, customer service, entrepreneurship, and income generation opportunities. This hands-on learning model is creating a bridge between vulnerable climate migrant communities and the local job market.

A special focus of the discussion was placed on how existing business owners can continue supporting skilled migrant individuals by offering apprenticeships, employment opportunities, and entrepreneurial guidance. Participants also shared valuable ideas and recommendations for improving future On-Job Training initiatives to make them more inclusive, practical, and sustainable.

As climate change continues to force families to migrate and rebuild their lives, skill transformation and economic inclusion have become essential for resilience and dignity. JJS remains committed to empowering climate-displaced women and youth through locally driven, employment-focused solutions that create lasting impact.

🌱 Capacity Development Workshop on Safeguarding, PSEA, CRM & Equality!

JJS continues to prioritize staff capacity development as a cornerstone of organizational excellence. On 15 April 2026, a day-long Capacity Development Workshop on Safeguarding, PSEA, CRM & Equality was successfully organized at the Caritas Regional Office in Khulna, with support from the Loss and Damage Special Initiative Project.
The workshop brought together JJS staff in an engaging and participatory learning space, reinforcing our commitment to building a safe, inclusive, and accountable organization.
The session opened with remarks from Executive Director ATM Zakir Hossain, who emphasized the importance of strengthening Complaint Response Mechanisms (CRM). He highlighted the need to ensure that complaint systems are active, responsive, and focused on organizational improvement rather than punishment. He also stressed equality—ensuring inclusion of ethnic minorities, fair treatment of women, and zero tolerance for sexual abuse.
Director HRD Lina Ferdousi led insightful sessions on Safeguarding, PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse), and Code of Conduct. She explained how a safe work environment can be ensured both in the field and office, while reinforcing accountability, respectful behavior, and organizational integrity.
Shyamoli Biswas facilitated an interactive session on Child Protection, highlighting JJS’s commitment aligned with the Child Protection Act 2013. Through group work, participants explored “do’s and don’ts” to ensure children’s safety, dignity, and rights.
Adding a critical dimension, Md. Sohel Rana introduced Gender Intersectionality, helping participants understand how overlapping identities—such as gender, age, disability, and geography—shape vulnerability. Staff reflected on their own vulnerabilities and discussed how to integrate intersectional thinking into program design and implementation.
The workshop also included hands-on group exercises on risk assessment, emergency preparedness, and safety measures, ensuring practical learning.
💬 The day concluded with reflections, feedback, and a shared commitment:
➡️ To strengthen safeguarding practices
➡️ To ensure inclusive participation
➡️ To build a resilient, accountable, and rights-based organization
This initiative highlights JJS’s dedication to continuous staff development—because empowered teams create lasting impact! ✨

🌍 Making Non-Economic Loss & Damage (NELD) Visible Through Play 🎲
We are proud to share one of our key publications that is making a meaningful difference in our work with climate migrant communities in Khulna City.
For many climate migrants, Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD)—such as loss of identity, culture, social networks, dignity, and sense of belonging—is deeply felt but difficult to express. During earlier activities like Living Lab storytelling sessions, community participants often struggled to clearly identify and organize these non-economic losses, even though they strongly face them in their everyday lives.
To bridge this gap, under the Loss and Damage Special Initiative Project developed an interactive Game Board on NELD—a simple, familiar, and participatory learning tool inspired by the classic snakes and ladders game. 🐍🪜
The game integrates 42 carefully identified NELD issue cards, developed directly from the lived experiences of climate migrants collected through participatory Living Lab approaches.
🎯 How it works:
As participants roll the dice, they randomly select a card and share a personal life story connected to the specific non-economic loss described. Each card represents a distinct form of loss caused by climate change, disasters, and migration. This process creates a safe and engaging space for storytelling, reflection, and collective learning.
✨ Impact & Significance:
 Enhances community understanding of complex NELD concepts
 Empowers climate migrants to clearly identify and articulate their non-economic losses
 Transforms lived experiences into structured, meaningful NELD information
 Strengthens participatory data collection for advocacy, research, and policy engagement
Through this game-based approach, climate migrant communities are not only learning about NELD—they are claiming their stories, voices, and lived realities.

🚨 16 Days of Activism 2025: JJS UNiTE Campaign to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls 🚨

Jagrata Juba Shangha (JJS), under the Loss and Damage Special Initiative Project, observed the 16 Days of Activism 2025 in solidarity with the global UNiTE campaign to end violence against women and girls. As part of the project’s living lab approach, a series of awareness and advocacy activities were conducted with climate-migrant women and adolescent/youth groups across Khulna city’s slum communities. From 25 November to 10 December 2025, JJS mobilized community groups under the global theme:
“UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.”

Digital spaces are meant to offer opportunities, safety, and empowerment. However, millions of women and girls face harassment, coercion, and discrimination online each day. The campaign highlighted how digital tools are increasingly misused to perpetuate gender-based violence, including image-based abuse, cyberbullying, online harassment, deepfake manipulation, hate speech, publishing private information, online stalking, grooming, and impersonation.
Through community dialogues, awareness sessions, and youth-led advocacy, the initiative emphasized that online abuse has no excuse and called for collective action to build safer, more inclusive digital spaces for all women and girls.

🌟 16 Days of Activism: Standing with Migrant Women & Youth Girls in Khulna City🌟

As part of our ongoing project, we are observing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence together with the migrant women and youth groups in Khulna City’s slum areas. 💛
Through our Living Lab sessions, we are creating safe spaces where women and young girls can share their experiences, strengthen their leadership, and raise their voices against all forms of gender-based violence.

👉 Our focus is simple but powerful:
This year, JJS stands with the global call to "UNITE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls."
Because every woman and every young person deserves safety, dignity, and equal opportunities.
Let’s come together to break the silence, challenge harmful norms, and build a community where gender-based violence has no place.
