We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Munir Hasan, the pioneer who taught a generation of Bangladeshi children to love mathematics, will be conducting Session 1: Arithmetic & Number Theory!

Forget rote memorization. Under his mentorship, our primary students (Grade 5 and below) will explore the hidden secrets of numbers. Through interactive games, visual "factor trees," and hands-on number-grid puzzles, they will build a rock-solid foundation for the BdMSO 2026!

When we think of advanced mathematics and science, we often picture rigid rules and dry memorization. But for Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, it was an entirely different world.

As a child, Maryam didn't dream of numbers; she wanted to be a writer. When she eventually discovered mathematics, she realized it wasn’t an abstract chore—it was a beautiful form of storytelling. Maryam was famous for her incredibly playful and visual approach to problem-solving. She would spread giant sheets of white paper across the floor, drawing elaborate doodles, shapes, and diagrams to find hidden patterns. She beautifully described tackling a tough problem as "being lost in a jungle and trying to use all the knowledge you can gather to come up with new tricks."

This is exactly why we are hosting the Maryam Mirzakhani School of Mathematics and Science for primary students (Grade 5 and below).
We want to show early-age learners that STEM is a canvas for imagination. Inspired by Maryam’s visual, creative mindset, this 3-day foundational intervention moves away from rote learning. Instead, it builds deep conceptual understanding, sharpens analytical thinking, and instills a lifelong passion for discovery. প্রাথমিক শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য মরিয়ম মির্জাখানি স্কুল অব ম্যাথম্যাটিকস এন্ড সায়েন্স–

বিজ্ঞান বা গণিতের ক্ষেত্রে শুরুতেই প্রাথমিক হস্তক্ষেপ কেন জরুরি? তার কারণ ভিত্তিটা তৈরি হয় একদম ছোটবেলা থেকে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ বলা যেতে পারে—'ভাগ'। ভাগের ধারণা যদি কারোর ঠিকমতো রপ্ত না হয় তাহলে পরের ধাপে অনুপাত, লাভ-ক্ষতি কিংবা শতকরার মতো বিষয়গুলোতে সে আটকে যাবে। একে একে ভগ্নাংশও আর ঠিকমতো বুঝতে পারবে না। আর ভগ্নাংশ না পারার অর্থ হলো আরও অনেক বিষয়ে পরিপূর্ণ ধারণা না থাকা।

একইভাবে জ্যামিতির কথাও ভাবা যায়। জ্যামিতির জনক ইউক্লিড মাত্র ৫টি স্বীকার্য আর কিছু সাধারণ ধারণা থেকে পুরো জ্যামিতির ভিত্তি গড়েছিলেন। তাই এই ভিত্তি না বুঝে সরাসরি থিওরেম আর প্রুফে গেলে জ্যামিতি কঠিনই লাগবে।

ইরানি গণিতবিদ মরিয়ম মির্জাখানি ছোটবেলায় লেখক হওয়ার স্বপ্ন দেখতেন। পরে তিনি গণিতের মাঝে কল্পনা, সৌন্দর্য আর গল্প খুঁজে পান। মুখস্থের বদলে তিনি ছবি, নকশা ও বিভিন্ন প্যাটার্ন এঁকে সমস্যা সমাধান করতেন। গণিতকে তিনি এক ধরনের গল্প বলার শিল্প মনে করতেন। নিজের এই সৃজনশীল চিন্তার মাধ্যমেই তিনি হয়েছেন বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে মর্যাদাপূর্ণ গণিত পুরস্কার “Fields Medal” জয় করা প্রথম নারী।

মরিয়ম মির্জাখানি নামে আমাদের নতুন এই উদ্যোগের উদ্দেশ্য হলো ছোটবেলা থেকেই মূল ধারণাগুলো ধরতে সাহায্য করা। শিক্ষার্থীরা বিষয়গুলো নিয়ে ভাববে এবং যতদূর সম্ভব নিজেরাই সমাধান বের করার চেষ্টা করবে। একটা কলার পাশে আরেকটা কলা রাখলে দুইটি কলা হয়। কিন্তু ১-এর পাশে আরেকটি ১ রাখলে সেটি কেন “এগারো” হয়—এটি বোঝাই সংখ্যা পদ্ধতির সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশগুলোর একটি। ১২৩৪ সংখ্যাটি যে আসলে ১০০০, ২০০, ৩০ আর ৪-এর যোগফল, সেটি বুঝতে পারা হচ্ছে সংখ্যাবোধের ভিত্তিমূল। এটি বুঝে গেলে বিভাজ্যতার মতো মুখস্থনির্ভর বিষয়ও অনেক সহজ হয়ে যায়।

ঈদের ছুটি শুরুর আগেই বাংলাদেশ বিজ্ঞান জনপ্রিয়করণ সমিতি তিনদিনের এই কর্মশালা –‘মরিয়ম মির্জাখানি স্কুল অব ম্যাথ অ্যান্ড সায়েন্স’ আয়োজন করছে। বিজ্ঞান বা গণিত যেকোন বিষয়েই ৫ম শ্রেণি বা তার নিচের শিক্ষার্থীরা এই কর্মশালায় অংশ নিতে পারবে। আমরা অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করছি অনুসন্ধিৎসু খুদেদের জন্য।
