It is a real challenge for Muslims to stay completely away from all sins or fully avoid bad habits in a world surrounded by many harams. Many times, we may struggle or fail to fully follow the aspects of shariah or remain completely free from haram.

Still, it is important for us to keep learning the clear rulings of Islam and to consistently try our best to stay away from what is forbidden, as much as we can.

𝟎𝟏. 𝐈𝐬 𝐬𝐊𝐚𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐊 𝐚𝐫 𝐊𝐚𝐀𝐫𝐮𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐊?

Ans: Haram (or Makruh, near to haram, according to a minority of scholars). Most of the contemporary Islamic scholars have ruled smoking to be clearly haram based on the principles of Shariah, due to its proven harm to the body, harm from passive smoking, and offensive odors. A Muslim is not allowed to harm himself or others. [Qur’an 2:195, Qur’an 33:58]

Fatwa: Sheikh Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid, Founder and Supervisor, IslamQA

𝟎𝟐. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐊𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐊𝐚𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐠?

Ans: If someone starts smoking in front of a Muslim, they should first politely advise them to stop or at least move to a place where it doesn’t harm others. If they continue and it’s possible to leave, then it’s better to step away from that gathering to avoid approving or being part of wrongdoing. [Qur’an 4:140]

Fatwa: Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-'Uthaymeen, Scholar and Former Member, Saudi Council of Senior Scholars

𝟎𝟑. 𝐈𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐊𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩?

Ans: No. As smoking itself is prohibited, then selling ci******es is also prohibited, because it assists others in a harmful act. Islam commands cooperation in righteousness, not in transgression. [Qur'an 5:2, Abu Dawud, 3026]

Fatwa: Sheikh Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid, Founder and Supervisor, IslamQA

𝟎𝟒. 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐊𝐚𝐀𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐊𝐞 𝐭𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐪𝐮𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐊𝐚𝐀𝐢𝐧𝐠?

Ans: The smell of ci******es can disturb worshippers and offend the angels. Therefore, a smoker should remove the odor as much as possible before attending the mosque and joining the congregation. [Sahih Muslim, 564]

Fatwa: Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz, Former Grand M***i, Saudi Arabia

𝟎𝟓. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐊𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚 𝐬𝐊𝐚𝐀𝐞𝐬?

Ans: Smoking is considered prohibited due to its proven harm, and it is a sin to practice it openly. However, most scholars state that praying behind a smoker is totally valid, as he remains a Muslim and his prayer is valid in itself. [Al-An’aam 6:116, Sahih al-Bukhari 662]

On May 29, 1453, one of the greatest victories in world history took place as the Ottoman Sultanate, under the leadership of the young 𝑺𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝑎𝒖𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒅 𝑰𝑰, conquered Constantinople after 53 days of relentless siege, sacrifice, and unwavering faith.

The prophecy of the conquest of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) is found in a famous narration (Hadith) recorded in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. The Prophet 𝑎𝒖𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒅 (ï·º) said: ❝Verily, you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will he be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!❞ [Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 18189]

For centuries, Muslims carried the dream of conquering Constantinople after the glad tidings regarding its conquest. Many armies had tried and failed before its massive walls. They thought after the Mongol invasions, Muslim political power have diminished, but Allah had better plans. Then 𝑺𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒏 𝑎𝒖𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒅 𝑰𝑰 and his army arrived with a vision rooted in Iman and dedication towards the cause of Islam.

The legendary Theodosian Walls of Constantinople stood undefeated for nearly a thousand years against land assaults and were long considered nearly impossible to break.

But in 1453, history changed.

The Ottomans brought massive cannons, and for weeks the city endured heavy bombardment. On the morning of May 29, the weakened walls were finally breached, and the Ottoman army entered Constantinople, marking one of the most iconic victories in history.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐟 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐊𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞

The conquest of Constantinople was more than a military victory. It became a symbol of Islamic strength, Muslim unity, and the rise of a powerful Islamic Sultanate that shaped world history for centuries. After the conquest, Hagia Sophia was transformed into a mosque, standing today as a witness to the legacy of Islamic civilization.

Many historians see the Fall of Constantinople as the event that ended the Middle Ages and opened a new era. While Europe faced political and religious turmoil, the Islamic world was rising with knowledge, shariah, and a civilization rooted in faith (imaan) and justice (insaaf).

More than five centuries later, the conquest of Constantinople continues to inspire Muslims around the world as a story of vision, perseverance, leadership, sacrifice, and Tawakkul upon Allah.

1453 was not just the fall of a city.

It was the rise of a new era. A new vision. A new civilization.

❝Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.❞

On this day, 6 May, we remember the Battle of Balakot (1831), a significant event in the early 19th-century Islamic revival in the Indian subcontinent.

Led by 𝐒𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐡𝐊𝐚𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐢 (𝐑𝐚.), an Islamic reformer and leader, the movement sought to purify Islamic practices, lay the ideological foundation for long-term anti-colonial resistance, and establish Islamic governance challenging Sikh rule in the northwest.

On 6 May 1831, in the mountainous region of Balakot (present-day Pakistan), a force of approximately 700-3,000 Mujahideen faced a better-equipped Sikh army of around 5,000. Despite great courage, 𝐒𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐡𝐊𝐚𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐢 (𝐑𝐚.), 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐡 𝐈𝐬𝐊𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐡𝐥𝐯𝐢 (𝐑𝐚.) and many of their companions were martyred.

Although the movement suffered a military defeat at Balakot, its ideological impact endured. It became one of the earliest organized armed Islamic revivalist efforts in the subcontinent and inspired later Muslim resistance movements against colonial aggressions rooted in Kufr.

Among those influenced was 𝐌𝐢𝐫 𝐍𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐢 𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐊𝐢𝐫 (𝐑𝐚.), the Bengali Muslim leader and reformer, who carried forward similar ideals of reform and Muslim resistance in Bengal against British colonial power and local oppressors.

Balakot remains a powerful symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and the spirit of Jihad in the pursuit of establishing Islamic ideals against systems of Kufr.

𝟓 𝐌𝐚𝐲, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟑. 𝐀 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

Shapla Chattar, Motijheel—where thousands gathered, and history took a dark turn.

What happened that night remains one of the most debated chapters in Bangladesh. Yet, there are several key aspects that are often overlooked:

❏ 01. The movement was not primarily political, nor driven by personal or group interests against the government. At its core, the 13-point demand focused on addressing ongoing online attacks targeting religious beliefs and calling for stronger legal protection for the honor of Islam and the Prophet (ﷺ).

Participants viewed their presence as a defense of faith and dignity. Over time, the gathering drew support from various political and non-political groups, along with a limited number of college and university students.

❏ 02. Throughout the day, tensions grew amid confusion, disagreement, and rising uncertainty. What began as a large-scale assembly gradually appeared, from the state’s perspective, as a potential threat to order. By nightfall, the situation had become highly unstable. This led to a decision by authorities to take control through force.

❏ 03. Around midnight, a large-scale operation was launched by law enforcement and security forces. The entire area was suddenly plunged into darkness as streetlights were turned off.

Reports describe a complete communication shutdown, including disruptions to internet, phone networks, and media coverage. Journalists were brutally forced to leave the scene, and a media blackout followed. The operation involved gunfire, water cannons, baton charges, and intense force, creating a scene of fear and chaos.

Some were killed on the spot, while many others were injured or fled in panic. Several individuals reportedly survived by hiding in nearby buildings, garages, water tanks, and under vehicles.

❏ 04. People were killed and injured, but the exact number remains disputed. A report by Odhikar listed 61 deaths, while other claims suggest significantly higher figures. Two television channels that attempted to broadcast live coverage were reportedly shut down the very next day. There were also incidents of attacks and destruction targeting newspaper offices that had published sensitive images of the deads and injured.

Efforts to document the true number of victims faced obstruction, and several human rights activists were harassed. In some cases, investigations were abruptly halted, leaving many questions unanswered. A significant number of those present were reportedly orphans, making identification even more difficult.

❏ 05. The government denied allegations of mass killings, leading to deep controversy and conflicting narratives. No widely accepted independent investigation has ever confirmed the final death toll. The incident remains deeply contested in public memory and discourse. For many, it stands as a symbol of unresolved truth, justice, and accountability.

•••

In the end, this was not merely a crackdown or a single night of state force. For many, it marked a decisive turning point—when a deep-rooted ideological divide in Bangladesh became visible in its most intense form.

The events of that night did not fade with time; they reshaped narratives, strengthened convictions, and ignited a lasting sense of identity and resistance among a large section of the Muslim population.

What happened at Shapla Chattar continues to live on—not just as a memory, but as an unresolved question of truth, justice, and the direction of a nation still searching for answers.

𝗛𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗵: 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗜𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (ï·º) said:

“𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐚 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐧, ‘𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡,’ 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬, ‘𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐚𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬,’ 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐚 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡.”

[Silsilah al-Saheehah, Hadith 2598]

𝗊𝗵𝗌𝗿𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗜𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗌𝗻:

This hadith condemns arrogance and the rejection of sincere advice. When someone reminds another person to be mindful of Allah, it is meant as a sincere reminder (الخير). Responding with dismissive or rude words—such as “𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐲𝐚𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞”, “𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐚𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐰𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞” or “𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐊 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞”—reflects clear arrogance and a disregard for guidance.

In reality, we struggle to fully practice Islam. There are things we fail to follow, and not everything is easy for everyone. But, more important than practice is the ability to acknowledge our shortcomings, sins as sins, obligations as obligations, and to accept advice from others.

After all, when someone reminds us about the Deen, encourages us toward good deeds, or advises us to avoid something haram or impermissible—𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐠𝐚 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐬—even if we are not yet able to act upon it.

What may not be possible today could become possible in the future. So, we must strive to stay away from arrogance and such disgraceful behavior. Ameen.
