The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh has decided to issue directives to ensure free Wi-Fi facilities across all public and private universities in the country within the shortest possible time. The official notice regarding this initiative is currently in its final stage.

This step aligns with the government’s election manifesto, which emphasizes expanding digital facilities in the education sector, supporting students in learning and research, and reducing the digital divide through the introduction of free internet access.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on March 25 at the UGC office, chaired by Dr. Mamun Ahmed. The meeting was attended by UGC members, senior officials, and representatives from the Bangladesh Research and Education Network, along with stakeholders from the HEAT project.

Initially, universities will be instructed to ensure free Wi-Fi access in libraries, common rooms, and cafeterias within 60 working days. With technical support from BdREN, the initiative will gradually expand to include residential halls and other academic and research facilities.

During the meeting, the UGC Chairman emphasized the importance of building a student-friendly digital infrastructure in higher education institutions and provided necessary guidance to the concerned bodies for effective implementation.
