Safe Water for All: A Step Toward SDG 6

As part of Bangladesh’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 6, we’re proud to share progress from a new initiative focused on bringing safe and reliable drinking water for marginalized communities.

In its first year, the project is being implemented in Koimari Union of Nilphamari District, where tube wells remain the primary source of drinking water. But access isn’t always easy. Many tube wells are difficult to reach, old or damagd, and often shared by a large number of users – a reality that can lead to confusion or occasional disputes over usage.

With generous support from Muslim Charity, the Safe Water Project is helping communities solve these challenges—by setting up tube wells and involving local people in the process. The goal is to make clean water easier to access for everyone, while also protecting people’s health and dignity.
Together, we’re making safe water a reality. 💙



সবার জন্য নিরাপদ পানি: এসডিজি ৬-এর পথে একটি পদক্ষেপ

বাংলাদেশের টেকসই উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রা ৬ (SDG 6) অর্জনের প্রতিশ্রুতির অংশ হিসেবে, আমরা গর্বের সঙ্গে একটি নতুন উদ্যোগের অগ্রগতি শেয়ার করছি—যার লক্ষ্য হলো প্রান্তিক জনগোষ্ঠীর জন্য নিরাপদ ও নির্ভরযোগ্য পানীয় জলের ব্যবস্থা নিশ্চিত করা।

প্রথম বছরে এই প্রকল্পটি বাস্তবায়িত হচ্ছে নীলফামারী জেলার কৈমারী ইউনিয়নে, যেখানে নলকূপই প্রধান পানীয় জলের উৎস। তবে এই পানির উৎসে পৌঁছানো সহজ নয়। অনেক নলকূপ দুর্গম স্থানে, পুরনো বা নষ্ট, এবং অনেক ব্যবহারকারী একসাথে ব্যবহার করেন, যার ফলে জল সংগ্রহে বিভ্রান্তি বা মাঝে মাঝে মতবিরোধ দেখা দেয়।

Muslim Charity-এর উদার সহায়তায়, Safe Water Project এই সমস্যাগুলোর সমাধানে কাজ করছে—নলকূপ স্থাপন এবং স্থানীয় জনগণের অংশগ্রহণের মাধ্যমে। লক্ষ্য হলো সবাই যেন সহজে পরিষ্কার পানি পেতে পারে, এবং মানুষের স্বাস্থ্য ও মর্যাদা যেন রক্ষা পায়।
আমরা একসাথে নিরাপদ পানির বাস্তবতা গড়ে তুলছি। 💙

Gram Unnayan Parishad (GUP): "Peoples development is in people's hand".

At the heart of every union, Gram Unnayan Parishad (GUP) stands as a platform for disadvantaged women to organize, raise their voices, and claim their rights.
Through UST’s grassroots efforts, Mohila Samity (women’s groups) are formed in villages—taking 3 to 4 years to grow into strong, self-led collectives. These groups elect representatives who together form the GUP.
GUP works to:
- Negotiate with local power structures
- Advocate for the rights of poor and marginalized communities
Each GUP has two parts:
- General Council (broader representation)
- Executive Committee (active decision-making).

Dr. Hamidul Huq

With over 40 years of experience in sustainable development, Dr. Huq is a pioneer in participatory research and grassroots empowerment. He currently leads academic and research initiatives at United International University (UIU), where he mentors the next generation of changemakers.

His expertise includes:
• Sustainable livelihoods & poverty alleviation
• Coastal zone & water resources management
• Ecosystem services & disaster resilience
• Interdisciplinary education & participatory research

Dr. Huq holds a Master’s in Social Welfare from the University of Dhaka and a PhD in Rural Development Sociology from Wageningen University, Netherlands. His acclaimed dissertation, People’s Practices, explores rural contestation and counter-development.

Before joining academia, he spent 25 years in the NGO sector, founding UST in 1986 to work with disadvantaged rural communities. Inspired by Gandhism, Mujism, and Dr. Y.C. James Yen’s Four-Fold Rural Reconstruction, UST’s work continues to uplift char, coastal, and monga-prone regions of Bangladesh.

Dr. Huq has also contributed to international research with UNESCO-IHE and IWFM, BUET—shaping policy and practice in solar energy, disaster management, and water governance.
His journey is a testament to inclusive, people-led development rooted in local wisdom and global collaboration.

ড. হামিদুল হক বাংলাদেশের টেকসই উন্নয়ন ও অংশগ্রহণমূলক গবেষণার একজন পথিকৃৎ। চার দশকেরও বেশি সময় ধরে তিনি একাধারে গবেষক, শিক্ষক, এবং মাঠপর্যায়ের কর্মী হিসেবে কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন।

তাঁর বিশেষজ্ঞতা :
• টেকসই জীবিকায়ন ও দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন
• উপকূলীয় ও পানি সম্পদ ব্যবস্থাপনা
• দুর্যোগ ব্যবস্থাপনা ও ইকোসিস্টেম সেবা
• আন্তঃবিষয়ক শিক্ষা ও অংশগ্রহণমূলক গবেষণা

তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে সোশ্যাল ওয়েলফেয়ার-এ অনার্সসহ মাস্টার্স এবং নেদারল্যান্ডসের ওয়াগেনিনজেন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে Rural Development Sociology-তে পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন। তাঁর গবেষণাগ্রন্থ People’s Practices গ্রামীণ জীবিকা ও বিকল্প উন্নয়ন চর্চার ওপর আলোকপাত করে।

২০০৭ সালে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে যোগদানের আগে তিনি ২৫ বছর এনজিও খাতে কাজ করেছেন। ১৯৮৬ সালে তিনি উন্নয়ন সহযোগী টিম (UST) প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন, যা গান্ধীবাদ, মুজিববাদ এবং ড. জেমস ইয়েন-এর Four-Fold Rural Reconstruction দর্শনে অনুপ্রাণিত। তাঁর নেতৃত্বে UST বাংলাদেশের চর, উপকূল ও মঙ্গাপ্রবণ এলাকায় অংশগ্রহণমূলক উন্নয়ন কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করে।

তিনি UNESCO-IHE এবং BUET-এর IWFM-এর সঙ্গে আন্তর্জাতিক গবেষণায় যুক্ত ছিলেন। তাঁর কাজ সোলার হোম সিস্টেম, দুর্যোগ ব্যবস্থাপনা এবং পানি শাসন নীতিতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রেখেছে।
ড. হক এখনো গবেষণা, শিক্ষা ও নীতিনির্ধারণে সক্রিয়ভাবে যুক্ত—স্থানীয় বাস্তবতা ও বৈশ্বিক কাঠামোর মধ্যে সেতুবন্ধন গড়ে তুলতে নিরলসভাবে কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন

তাঁর কাজ আমাদের শেখায়: টেকসই পরিবর্তন আসে যখন মানুষ নিজেই তার ভাগ্যের পরিবর্তনের নায়ক হয়।
