A glimpse of Dhaka Files: JAAGO Foundation edition
As part of our survey, we invited schools across Dhaka to help build a simple habit of reducing plastic use among students. The challenge was carried out over two days. On the first day, the amount of plastic waste collected was recorded, and students were encouraged to bring reusable items for the following day. These included containers for food, reusable water bottles, and other everyday belongings instead of single use plastic bags. Alongside this, teachers conducted a session with students on reducing plastic waste, explaining how everyday choices can help lower pollution and protect the environment. On the second day, the reduction in plastic use was recorded.
We could not be prouder of the students who actively took part and showed genuine effort. We extend our heartfelt thanks to JAAGO Foundation for their commitment and for successfully carrying out the challenge.

“Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.” - Rosalind Franklin

Honoring Rosalind Franklin (25 July 1920 - 16 April 1958), the Unsung Hero of DNA. Brilliant chemist, trailblazing crystallographer.

Her X-ray diffraction image Photo 51 was key to unlocking the double helix structure of DNA. Yet for decades, her contributions were overshadowed.

On her birthday, we remember a woman of science who worked with quiet strength, integrity, and brilliance.

She never got the Nobel Prize, but the truth lives on in every textbook, every lab, every cell. Thank you, Rosalind, for changing science forever.

Micro misogyny refers to subtle everyday forms of sexism that reflect or reinforce negative attitudes toward women. Although these actions are classified as “micro”aggressions, they can have lasting impacts.

How to identify:
You can find it in the daily conversations you have with people.

In everyday life:
• “Two daughters? No son? What a shame!”
• “She is a girl. She doesn’t eat much”
• “It doesn’t matter if you aren’t doing well in your studies. You can just get married”

In professional context:
• “I am surprised you chose engineering”
• “Women can’t do desk jobs.”
• “Well of course she can cook”; “He can cook?! That is so impressive”
• Presuming an unseen doctor to be a man and similarly, presuming a nurse to be a woman

These comments can discourage young women to pursue professions which are mostly considered masculine— even in professions where women make up the majority of the workforce, like healthcare.

How to tackle:
You may get taken aback or you may feel anger. But the best way to tackle or handle such behavior is by simply questioning them— this calls them out for the beliefs they have.
Example : “Wow, you chose engineering?”
-“yes, why are you surprised?”

Why should we be aware of it:
Micro misogyny is something rooted deeply within society. In fact you may have participated in it without realizing.
However it’s these small things that accumulate and create a much bigger aggression towards half of the population— the previously mentioned offhand comments might seem harmless, but they make girls and women doubt their own potential and worth.

It’s time we make ourselves aware of such behavior and take a stand against it.
It’s time we give women the respect they have always deserved.
