A Proud Moment for Bangladesh

The opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly is a moment of immense pride for Bangladesh and Bangladeshis around the world.

With Dr. Khalilur Rahman serving as President of the 81st UN General Assembly, Bangladesh has the honour of seeing one of its own lead the world’s premier multilateral forum at a time of profound global transformation.

His leadership places Bangladesh at the centre of international dialogue on peace, development, global cooperation and the future of multilateralism. It is a powerful reflection of Bangladesh’s growing voice and contribution on the world stage.

The theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all,” carries a message that resonates far beyond the UN. It is a call for stronger cooperation, renewed trust and meaningful action.

For every Bangladeshi, this is more than a prestigious international position. It is a moment to celebrate Bangladesh’s presence, dignity and growing influence in global affairs.

A proud moment for Bangladesh. A proud moment for every Bangladeshi.

Bangladesh’s Investment Architecture Is Entering a New Phase

Bangladesh is moving toward a significant reform of its investment facilitation framework with the proposed establishment of " Invest Bangladesh ” a unified authority aimed at bringing greater coordination to investment promotion and facilitation.

The proposed framework would bring together functions currently associated with the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), and Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA).

The developments highlighted in the report point to a broader ambition: making Bangladesh a more competitive destination for both domestic and international investment.

Key developments include:

• Integrated investment facilitation: A more coordinated institutional structure could reduce duplication, simplify approvals, and improve one-stop services for investors.

• Chattogram Port and Laldia Container Terminal: The development of the Laldia Container Terminal is strategically important for strengthening Bangladesh’s trade and logistics infrastructure and improving its connectivity with global markets.

• Chinese Economic & Industrial Zone (CEIZ): The start of construction could create new opportunities for manufacturing, foreign investment, technology transfer and employment.

• A growing investment pipeline: Large-scale projects involving substantial domestic and foreign capital could support infrastructure development, industrial expansion and export growth.

However, institutional restructuring by itself will not make Bangladesh a more competitive investment destination. The real test will be implementation.

Investors will ultimately look at regulatory predictability, transparency, infrastructure, access to finance, efficiency of public institutions, dispute resolution and the consistency of government policy.

If implemented effectively, the Invest Bangladesh initiative could help Bangladesh strengthen its position in regional and global value chains while creating a more predictable environment for long-term investment.

The bigger question is not simply how much investment Bangladesh can attract, but what that investment delivers for the economy—in terms of productivity, technology transfer, quality employment, export diversification and sustainable economic transformation.

For Bangladesh, this could be an important opportunity to move from an investment-promotion mindset toward a more strategic approach to investment-led development.

Why Bangladesh Should Consider Joining the U.S.-Led Pax Silica Initiative

The proposal for Bangladesh to join the U.S.-led Pax Silica initiative deserves serious attention. The global economy is entering an era where artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technologies, and critical minerals will shape economic growth and geopolitical influence. Countries that become part of these technology ecosystems early are likely to gain the greatest long-term benefits.

For Bangladesh, the advantages could be significant. First, participation could attract high-quality foreign investment in technology manufacturing, digital infrastructure, and research. This would help diversify the economy beyond traditional sectors such as garments.

Second, Bangladesh's young population could benefit from new skills, better jobs, and technology transfer. Partnerships with global companies and universities would strengthen the country's innovation ecosystem and prepare the workforce for future industries.

Third, joining such an initiative could improve economic security by giving Bangladesh access to more resilient global supply chains for advanced technologies and critical materials. This is increasingly important in an era of geopolitical competition.

Finally, Bangladesh has an opportunity to position itself as a trusted technology partner between East and West. Rather than choosing sides, Bangladesh can pursue a balanced foreign policy while cooperating with multiple partners to advance its national interests.

If managed wisely, participation in the Pax Silica initiative could help Bangladesh accelerate its journey toward becoming a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy, creating sustainable growth, better employment opportunities, and greater global competitiveness in the decades ahead.

One of the largest bank robberies in history was partially stopped by a typo.

The investigation that followed produced a detail that has stayed with me ever since. A Bangladeshi police investigator told Reuters that the bank had no firewall on the relevant network and had connected its SWIFT infrastructure using second-hand switches that cost about ten dollars each. The attackers, later identified by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation as operatives working for North Korea, had spent months preparing a sophisticated intrusion. The defense they had to beat was a ten dollar switch.

Every major defense purchase should also be an opportunity to transfer knowledge, develop local industries, create high-skilled jobs, and build the technological capacity of tomorrow.

The future battlefield will be shaped not only by weapons but by artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, autonomous systems, advanced electronics, and innovation.

Bangladesh’s goal should not simply be to become a larger buyer. It should become a capable producer, innovator, and strategic technology partner.
The strongest defense is not only purchased abroad, it is designed, built, sustained, and improved at home.

World Youth Skills Day 2026 | Skills for a Shared Future

The future of every nation depends on the skills of its young people. As artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and the green economy reshape the global workforce, investing in youth is no longer optional, it is a strategic necessity.

Bangladesh possesses one of the world's largest youth populations. To fully harness this demographic dividend, the country must bridge persistent gaps in quality technical and vocational education, digital literacy, industry-academia collaboration, and equitable access to skills training.

Empowering young people with technical, digital, AI, green, social-emotional, and civic competencies will strengthen innovation, create decent jobs, foster entrepreneurship, and accelerate sustainable development.

On World Youth Skills Day 2026, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a workforce that is resilient, future-ready, and globally competitive.

Invest in youth today. Build a shared future for all.

Climate Diplomacy Must Deliver Justice for Bangladesh

For decades, climate diplomacy has revolved around ambitious declarations and negotiated targets. Yet for countries like Bangladesh, the true measure of diplomacy is not what is promised at international conferences, but what is delivered on the ground.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bangladesh has contributed less than 0.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet between 2000 and 2023 the country experienced 134 major climate-related disasters, affecting 129.4 million people, claiming 11,564 lives, and causing at least US$13.6 billion in direct economic losses. The continuing floods and other extreme weather events in 2026, reported by Reuters, demonstrate that these impacts are intensifying rather than diminishing.

These figures are not abstract statistics. They represent submerged homes, destroyed crops, disrupted education, damaged infrastructure, and millions of people whose livelihoods have been repeatedly shattered by a crisis they did little to create. Climate change has become a development challenge, a humanitarian emergency, and a growing threat to regional stability.

The evidence is clear. Data from the EM-DAT International Disaster Database (CRED) consistently identifies Bangladesh as one of the world's most disaster-prone countries. Meanwhile, assessments by the IMF show that climate-related disasters have already imposed billions of dollars in economic losses, undermining decades of development gains.

This is why climate diplomacy must move beyond expressions of solidarity. The commitments made under the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) must translate into accessible climate finance, the full operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, accelerated technology transfer, and stronger support for adaptation in vulnerable countries.

Bangladesh is not seeking preferential treatment. It is asking the international community to uphold the principles it has already endorsed: equity, common but differentiated responsibilities, and climate justice. Diplomacy that fails to protect those least responsible for the climate crisis cannot claim to be successful.

The climate emergency is no longer a future risk—it is a present reality. For Bangladesh, justice delayed is resilience denied. The credibility of global climate diplomacy will ultimately depend not on the strength of its rhetoric, but on whether it stands with those on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

Act on Climate. Stand with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh contributes less than 0.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it remains one of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations. Every year, cyclones, floods, river erosion, sea-level rise, and extreme heat destroy lives and livelihoods.

The reality:

• Climate-related disasters cost Bangladesh an estimated 1–2% of its GDP annually around US$3 billion in losses. Without stronger global climate action, these losses could reach 9% of GDP by the end of the century.

• More than 90 million Bangladeshis over half the population live in areas exposed to multiple climate hazards.

• Tropical cyclones alone cause around US$1 billion in average annual losses, while river erosion continues to swallow homes, farmland, and entire communities.

• The recent monsoon floods left over one million people stranded, a stark reminder that the climate crisis is not a distant threat, it's happening now.

Climate justice is not charity, it is accountability. Those who have contributed most to the climate crisis must lead with deeper emissions cuts and provide the finance, technology, and support needed for vulnerable nations to adapt, recover, and thrive.

Bangladesh did not create this crisis. Bangladesh should not pay its highest price.

UNGA 81 | Theme: Localizing the SDGs
Bangladesh's progress begins with local leadership

•From Global Vision to Local Action.

The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) presents a defining opportunity to transform the Sustainable Development Goals from global commitments into tangible local outcomes.

For Bangladesh, Localizing the SDGs is more than an international agenda—it is a pathway to strengthening climate resilience, empowering youth, advancing inclusive governance, fostering sustainable economic growth, and enhancing public diplomacy.

At the Academy of Analytics and Research (AAR), we are committed to bridging global dialogue with local solutions through evidence-based research, strategic advisory, and multi-stakeholder engagement. As an independent, non-profit, and non-partisan think tank, we believe that informed policy and collaborative action are essential to building a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous Bangladesh.

Global commitments. National priorities. Local impact.
