OP-ed alert !

Junior Research Assistant of BIGG, Samia Iffat explored the different dimensions of democracy alongside the ballot box, by analyzing the governance and democratic structure of Bhutan.

As democracies around the world confront public dissatisfaction, Bhutan reminds us that the health of a democracy cannot be measured only through the ballot box. It must also be evaluated through the well-being, dignity, security, and trust experienced by citizens.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ As climate change pushes families from their homes, women climate migrants face a second crisis after displacement. In Bangladeshโ€™s secondary cities, many are forced into insecure informal jobs with low wages, limited labour protection, unsafe living conditions and inadequate access to healthcare. Their struggle is not only about climate displacementโ€”it is also about gender inequality, poverty and dignity.

Building a climate-resilient Bangladesh means protecting those most vulnerable. Better wages, safer work, accessible healthcare, social protection and policies designed around the realities of female climate migrants are urgently needed.

๐Ÿƒ Behind Bangladeshโ€™s tea industry are thousands of workers whose labour fills our cups, yet whose own lives remain marked by poverty, limited healthcare, poor access to education and social marginalisation. In the tea gardens of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj, generations of workers continue a cycle of hardship that deserves far greater national attention.

True progress cannot leave the people behind. Better wages, education, healthcare, housing and stronger labour rights are essential if Bangladeshโ€™s tea industry is to have a future built on shared dignity and prosperity.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ The Teesta is no longer just a river issueโ€”it has become a major test of Bangladeshโ€™s foreign policy. With the long-delayed water-sharing deal with India still unresolved and China offering support for the ambitious Teesta River project, Dhaka faces a difficult balancing act between water security, economic development and regional geopolitics.

Can Bangladesh protect its national interests without becoming caught between India and China?

โ›ˆ๏ธ Dhaka underwater, once again.

As heavy rains once again leave parts of Dhaka submerged, this is a timely write-up on the city's recurring flood crisis and the urgent need for resilient infrastructure and better urban planning.

Through powerful words, it captures the human impact of rain-induced urban flooding, reminding us why this issue demands urgent attention.

Brief Call: 01

BIGG successfully convened the first brief call of its inaugural Internship Cohort under a hybrid engagement framework. The session commenced with an interactive ice-breaking segment, followed by a structured orientation on the task of Issue Identification and Summarization.

As part of the upcoming research activities, interns have been assigned to identify and critically summarize emerging issues from BIGGโ€™s five core thematic focus areas over the coming week. This exercise is designed to strengthen analytical capacity, policy-oriented research skills, and issue-based strategic thinking among participants.

The program marks the beginning of a collaborative and intellectually engaging journey aimed at fostering the next generation of researchers and policy practitioners.
