Condolences and Solidarity!

We are deeply saddened by the devastating loss of lives in the flash floods in the Nepal–Tibet border region.

Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, those still missing, and all communities affected by this tragedy.

Such disasters are a sobering reminder of the growing risks faced by vulnerable mountain communities in a rapidly changing climate. While individual extreme events cannot automatically be attributed to climate change, a warming planet is altering rainfall patterns, accelerating glacier and cryosphere changes, and increasing the potential for cascading hazards in many regions.

As the Himalayas face a rapidly changing climate and growing risks from extreme weather and glacial hazards, this tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen climate resilience, early-warning systems and disaster preparedness.

Bangladesh is moving from a plastic-waste management model to a producer-responsibility model.

The major policy shift is that the responsibility no longer ends when a plastic product is sold. Under the new EPR framework, producers, importers and brands are increasingly expected to take responsibility for collection and recycling after their products become waste.

This could create a major opportunity for Bangladesh to build a formal recycling economy, strengthen waste collection, integrate informal waste workers, and reduce plastic leakage into rivers and the sea.

It’s time to make producer responsibility work.

Extreme heat and drought are putting pressure on Europe’s entire energy system—not just nuclear power.

The lesson is clear: energy resilience requires diversity, adaptation and science-based decisions. Climate-proof nuclear power, rapidly expanding solar, storage and stronger grids can work together to deliver a more secure, low-carbon energy future.

The debate should not be nuclear vs. solar. It should be about building an energy system resilient enough for a hotter world.

Bangladesh’s Power Crisis: Time for Reliable, Clean Energy

Bangladesh is once again facing severe load-shedding, with the national power shortage exceeding 3,000 MW as gas shortages, disrupted coal supply and rising demand strain the grid. The crisis is disrupting households, agriculture and industries across the country.

This is a reminder that Bangladesh needs a reliable, diversified and low-carbon energy mix—not greater dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The ongoing Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, with two 1,200 MW units, can become an important part of this transition by providing large-scale, reliable, low-carbon electricity alongside renewables, grid upgrades and energy efficiency.

Reliable energy is essential for development. Clean energy is essential for the future. Bangladesh needs both.

Extreme heat is becoming one of Bangladesh's biggest economic risks.

A World Bank report reveals that extreme heat is already taking a significant toll on Bangladesh's economy. In 2024 alone, heat-related productivity losses were estimated at US$1.3–1.8 billion—equivalent to 0.3–0.4% of GDP.

In Dhaka, rising temperatures make 3% of working hours unworkable, resulting in productivity losses equivalent to 465,000 full-time jobs each year. Without stronger adaptation measures, these losses are projected to more than double by 2080.

This is no longer just a climate challenge—it is an economic and development challenge. Rising temperatures are reducing productivity, straining businesses, threatening workers' health, and putting food security and livelihoods at greater risk.

Investing in heat-resilient infrastructure, protecting workers from heat stress, strengthening early warning systems, and implementing effective heat action plans are essential to safeguarding Bangladesh's economy.

Protecting tigers is about more than saving a single species—it means safeguarding the Sundarbans, preserving biodiversity, and maintaining the health of one of the world's most important ecosystems.
