🚨 Children in Bangladesh are already growing up with a silent poison in their blood. Lead exposure is damaging brain development, learning, and future potential.

Despite phasing out leaded petrol, informal lead acid battery recycling from the booming e-rickshaw sector is now spreading toxic contamination across communities.

There is no safe level of lead exposure and the damage is irreversible.

Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of YouthNet Global, says, “Lead poisoning is silently stealing the future of millions of children in Bangladesh. This is a national emergency that demands urgent coordinated action.”

As Mitali Das, Country Director of Pure Earth Bangladesh warns, “The process is as primitive as it is lethal,” driven by unsafe and unregulated recycling networks.

There is hope. Lead poisoning is preventable.

YouthNet Global is mobilizing youth across all 64 districts for campaign partnering with the Pure Earth, and promote a just transition that protects both livelihoods and children’s health.

We cannot wait. The future of Bangladesh’s children is already at stake.

Where governments fall behind, people build the future of energy.

Pakistan shows that the energy transition is now community-driven, not top-down. Families facing rising bills, factories facing load shedding, and small businesses are turning to solar for survival.

Across the developing world—from Nigeria to Bangladesh—falling solar costs and climate stress are driving decentralized energy.

Bangladesh stands at a crossroads. The energy crisis is accelerating solar adoption, but high import taxes and duties on panels and equipment are making clean energy less affordable and slowing the transition.

The lessons are clear: people are already leading the shift, energy costs are a justice issue, and urgent reforms in tariffs, financing, and grid systems are needed.

Renewable energy is survival, independence, and fairness.

Institutions must catch up with change already happening from below.

Call to action: Support policies that make clean energy accessible for all.

According to a 2014 World Bank study, driven by global climate change, rising sea levels are continuously increasing salinity levels across Bangladesh’s coastal districts. This environmental shift is acutely felt in the riverine areas of Khulna, Bagerhat, and Satkhira adjacent to the Bay of Bengal.

Speaking to over fifty local workers, it was found that, on one hand, the rising salt levels ravage agriculture and contaminate freshwater sources, on the other, prolonged exposure to high salinity is triggering hypertension and cardiovascular diseases among labourers. Consequently, working-class individuals are suffering debilitating strokes at a relatively young age, losing their ability to earn, and sinking their families into inescapable debt to afford medical care.

Government data and studies state that people living near saline regions of Bangladesh are more likely to suffer from strokes.

Floods, cyclones, river erosion, and displacement are no longer distant threats for Bangladesh they are a daily reality for millions of climate affected communities. Yet global climate finance is still far below what vulnerable countries actually need.

At a high level roundtable on “Bangladesh's Readiness for Climate Disaster Risk Finance and Insurance CDRFI” jointly organised by CARE Bangladesh and AOSED in Dhaka, We called for urgent reforms in how climate finance is designed, accessed, and delivered.

Bangladesh loses nearly 1 to 2 percent of its GDP every year due to climate impacts while the annual financing gap for adaptation, loss and damage, and resilience continues to widen.

Speaking at the discussion, Our Executive Coordinator Sohanur Rahman stressed the urgent need for trust, coordination, and justice centered finance systems.

“We cannot discuss climate finance without discussing a just transition. Adaptation, loss and damage, and labour rights must move together,” he said.

He further warned that weak coordination between NGOs, private sector actors, philanthropic initiatives, and communities continues to limit the effectiveness of climate finance in Bangladesh. While alternative sources such as private investment and faith based financing exist, concerns over transparency and accountability remain a major barrier.

As global trade and climate rules evolve including mechanisms like the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism CBAM Bangladesh’s export sectors must prepare for a fair and people centered transition that protects workers and vulnerable communities. 🌍

YouthNet emphasizes that the challenge is not only the shortage of global funding but also weak access systems, limited trust, and insufficient domestic readiness.

Climate finance is not charity
It is climate justice
It is survival dignity and resilience ✊

Sir David Attenborough views the youth as the ultimate hope for our planet. He has publicly admitted that his own generation failed to halt the climate crisis. However, he is deeply inspired by the passion, conviction, and demands of young people who are making their voices heard.
