We didn’t just fail Naima Chowdhury. We deleted her.

Look at this face. Naima was admitted to Pabna Mental Hospital at 25. She lived there for 17 years. Her family stopped visiting. She died last Monday, alone. Her body is currently sitting in a morgue because no one will claim her.

In Bangladesh, we pride ourselves on "family values" and "community," but the moment someone’s mind breaks, we treat them like a broken appliance to be discarded.

Why is this still happening in 2026?

Stigma is a Death Sentence: In our culture, mental illness isn’t seen as a health issue; it’s seen as a "disgrace" to the family name. We hide our relatives in back rooms or hospitals to keep our social "masks" intact. We care more about what the neighbors think than whether our sister is breathing.

Literacy is NOT Education: You can have a PhD and still be "backdated" if you think depression is "laziness" or schizophrenia is a "curse." Our lack of emotional literacy is killing people. We are taught to earn, but never taught to empathize.

The "Outcast" Cycle: When a person is labeled "mad," they lose their humanity in the eyes of the public. They are no longer seen as people with talents, dreams, or rights. They become "unclaimed."

The Harsh Reality:

Bangladesh is developing fast—we have the infrastructure, the technology, and the growth. But a country that leaves its most vulnerable to rot in a morgue because of "shame" is a country that is still living in the dark ages.

It’s time to stop blaming "culture" and start taking responsibility. Mental health is a medical reality, not a spiritual failure.

A hospital should be a bridge back to society, not a warehouse for the forgotten.

If you have a family member struggling, don’t "unclaim" them. The Silence is what kills them faster than the disease.

Rest in peace, Naima. We are sorry we weren't a society worth staying for.
