Society for Participatory Education and Development (SPED) is a development non-profitable facilitating organization as well as a network for disadvantaged people's organizations, and consists of the Reflect Practitioners Forum of Bangladesh (RPFB) and other like-minded organizations who are implementing and promoting participatory approaches (Reflect, Par, Reflection-Action, Action Research etc.

). SPED is working closely with grassroots underprivileged Peoples organizations, strives for sustainable development of the poor and marginalized communities. SPED believes that transformation of society to make it more just and egalitarian is possible when a critical mass of people, those currently marginalized, come forward in collective action to claim their rights. Participatory approaches contribute to the social awareness of individuals, to develop their analytical skills so that they can organize and successfully claim their just rights. The process of developing a forum on participatory education and development was initiated in January, 1997 through discussion on the need for such a forum. This was finally formalized in May, 1999 with the technical support from the Reflect Co-ordination Unit of Actionaid Bangladesh. In the fifth Annual General Meeting of the Forum held in April, 2004, the Members of the organization decided to change the name of the forum to ease the legal process and Forum for Participatory Education and Development underwent a change and became Society for Participatory Education and Development (SPED). In this year, SPED achieved its legal status under the Society Act 1860 and, also received legal footing from the Ministry of Social welfare and NGO affairs Bureau as well. SPED is well-known nationally and internationally as a development organization and is showcased in the `Be The Change Campaign-http://www.youcanbethechange.com/stories.'

Strategic Objective:
Empowering the grassroots people's organizations into participatory liberating education approaches in order to enable them have access to services, enjoy their constitutional rights and, thus, acquire self-independent, self-sufficient and, economic independence. Strategy and approach:
(one): The goal is to Empower the people through the breaking of the culture of silence to develop themselves and capacity build-up for the practitioners of liberating education approaches (people’s organization, Human Resource organization) in which they can practice and implement this education method. (two): Introducing and Lobbying right based participatory liberating education, particularly participatory approaches (Reflect, Par, Action Research, Reflection-Action etc.) to government policy makers, non-governmental organizations, donor agencies and UN agencies so that this method can get acceptability and recognition in the process of changing and evolution of the education system in Bangladesh. Program:
There are three main programs area of SPED have
1. Empowering and creating human rights awareness among people’s organization.
2. Establishment of rights and access to the resources for lives and livelihoods.
3. Management & Governance:
According to the organogram there is a framework for implementation and direction of the organization, The Executive Committee is responsible for the smooth operation and overall management of the Society. The executive committee makes the decision, approve and monitor the organizational budget, activities, hiring staff etc. They also advise the Coordinator who is selected and appointed by them; oversee the management operation and leading the organization. All Reflect implementing organizations, Community based disadvantaged people’s organizations (Lokokendras), Individual Reflect Practitioners will be eligible for becoming members of the society. Now, there are twenty nine general member of SPED. General committee elected the Executive committee

SPED has established a Reflect Research and Training Center (RRTC) which is used by other development organization as a training Center and has been very popular among other services and researchable activities are also done by this center. Resource materials on different development issues are also available at the RRTC. The major objectives of RRTC include:

Conduct research/ study on Reflect and other participatory approaches
Organize Seminar, Workshop, Convention and Conference to share research / study findings
Disseminate research/ study reports to the relevant audience
Identify potential participatory approaches for development work
Provide venue facilities when required
