“I'm scared of math” - one of the most commonly heard lines among school students in Bangladesh. A new study points to a way out through Khan Academy Bangladesh.

Research by Professor Shah Shamim Ahmed of IER, University of Dhaka, involving 5,300 students, found that regular use of Khan Academy's platform helped students overcome their fear in Mathematics and allowed teachers to track and guide each learner individually.

The findings were shared in a dissemination workshop yesterday at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) auditorium, attended by the Director General of the National Academy of Educational Management, Director of Planning and Development at DSHE, government officials, educators, researchers, and SAJIDA Foundation representatives - all recognising its power to reduce learning gaps and make classrooms more participatory.

The research was implemented with support from the SAJIDA Foundation and at the initiative of Khan Academy Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's historic family planning achievements are reversing and the impacts run deep.

The total fertility rate, that fell from 6.3 to 2.3 over five decades, has gone up to 2.4 in 2025. Family planning contacts are down 45% since 2023, with only 17.87% of the urban poor being reached. Nearly half of postpartum women in informal settlements remain without contraception.

In one of the world's most densely populated countries, this is a crisis that can't afford inaction.

At today's roundtable organised by SAJIDA Foundation in partnership with Prothom Alo under The Challenge Initiative, experts called for urgent action: stronger prioritisation of family planning in budget and human resource allocation, clear accountability across government actors, health workers’ capacity building, and improved NGO-government-private sector coordination - all contributing to system strengthening.

Through our RGIL Community Eye Care project with VisionSpring, this has changed for over 100,000 people - they are seeing clearly again.

In Bangladesh, 6 in 10 people aged 35 and above live with presbyopia. A simple pair of glasses can fix it, yet many, especially women in rural communities, go without. To remove this barrier, we ensured:

-189,608 people screened
-129,275 identified
-105,135 provided with glasses

A simple solution delivering real economic and social impact as improved vision means greater productivity, confidence, and independence.

How is digital learning shaping classrooms in Bangladesh?
