“Across the most fundamental aspects of life — work and income, family and property, mobility, safety and security — women continue to face systemic disadvantage.” — Gitanjali Singh, Representative, UN Women.

On March 9, 2026, UN Women, in partnership with The Daily Star and with support from the European Union in Bangladesh, convened a roundtable to launch a report offering a comprehensive gender-based analysis of Bangladesh’s legal framework. “We have to keep going with education, respect, and leadership. These are what we will leave behind for the next generation.” Rohingya Gender Volunteer, Camp 18.

On 27 April 2026, a delegation from the Embassy of Sweden, led by Hanna Norell, Head of Swedish Development Cooperation and Deputy Head of Mission, and accompanied by colleagues from the Embassy of Sweden and Sida’s Humanitarian Department, visited the UN Women’s Multipurpose Women’s Centre (MPWC) in Camp 18, managed by the local women-led organization, Nari Maitree.

During the visit, the delegation met Rohingya gender volunteers and women leaders from self‑organised women’s networks, hearing firsthand how women in the camps are building leadership within their communities.

The delegation received a brief tour of the MPWC, highlighting its role as a one‑stop centre offering integrated services, skills development, and ongoing community activities as well as engaged with men involved in the Engaging Men through Accountable Practice initiative.

“We believe leadership trainings are preparing us so that one day we can manage the Women’s Centre ourselves, become trainers and support other women to become leaders in our community.” A Rohingya woman leader shared her reflections during the discussion with the delegates.

✅The Time Use Survey 2021 by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and UN Women, reveals that women in Bangladesh spend 7.3 times as much time on unpaid and domestic work as men. Recognizing the economic value of unpaid care strengthens the case for ensuring that those who provide care within families and households have a fair share of, and control over, generated income.

According to the Household Production Satellite Account (HPSA) report by BBS and UN Women, developed with and technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), shows that in 2021, the value of women’s unpaid work was equivalent to 5.7 trillion taka, in monetary terms.

At the National Care Conclave 2026, UN Women Bangladesh, in collaboration with ADB Bangladesh and আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রম সংস্থা - International Labour Organization and the Ministries of Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare, brought together government, development partners, and civil society to advance dialogue on building a transformative care economy in Bangladesh.

The conclave was graced by Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh/ সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়, বাংলাদেশ Mr. Md. Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain and Honourable State Minister of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh/ সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়, বাংলাদেশ, Ms. Farzana Sharmin.

“The undervaluing and gendered division of care work, unpaid and paid, is one of the biggest drivers of gender inequality. It limits women’s and girls’ time and opportunities for education, decent paid work, and political participation and leadership,” stated Gitanjali Singh, Representative, UN Women Bangladesh.

🤝 Through ministerial dialogues, a high-level panel, and technical sessions, participants explored policy pathways to strengthen care systems, shift social norms, and expand decent work in the care sector, reaffirming a shared commitment to a gender-responsive care policy framework.
