✅The Time Use Survey 2021 by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and UN Women, reveals that women in Bangladesh spend 7.3 times as much time on unpaid and domestic work as men. Recognizing the economic value of unpaid care strengthens the case for ensuring that those who provide care within families and households have a fair share of, and control over, generated income.
According to the Household Production Satellite Account (HPSA) report by BBS and UN Women, developed with and technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), shows that in 2021, the value of women’s unpaid work was equivalent to 5.7 trillion taka, in monetary terms.
At the National Care Conclave 2026, UN Women Bangladesh, in collaboration with ADB Bangladesh and আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রম সংস্থা - International Labour Organization and the Ministries of Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare, brought together government, development partners, and civil society to advance dialogue on building a transformative care economy in Bangladesh.
The conclave was graced by Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh/ সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়, বাংলাদেশ Mr. Md. Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain and Honourable State Minister of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh/ সমাজকল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়, বাংলাদেশ, Ms. Farzana Sharmin.
“The undervaluing and gendered division of care work, unpaid and paid, is one of the biggest drivers of gender inequality. It limits women’s and girls’ time and opportunities for education, decent paid work, and political participation and leadership,” stated Gitanjali Singh, Representative, UN Women Bangladesh.
🤝 Through ministerial dialogues, a high-level panel, and technical sessions, participants explored policy pathways to strengthen care systems, shift social norms, and expand decent work in the care sector, reaffirming a shared commitment to a gender-responsive care policy framework.
