Standing Tall on One Leg: A New Beginning for Abdul Mannan Through the Humanitarian Support of Kabir Foundation
In 2020, the life of Abdul Mannan, a resident of Chakmuktar Mondolpara in Naogaon, changed forever. A tragic road accident involving a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw resulted in the loss of his left leg. In that single moment, he lost not only a limb but also his dreams, his ability to work as before, his family's sense of security, and much of the hope he had for the future.
Determined to rebuild his life, Abdul Mannan began learning to walk and work again with the help of an artificial limb. However, fate had more challenges in store for him. Medical examinations revealed stones in both kidneys and the urinary tract. Although surgery on his right kidney was somehow managed, he is still in urgent need of surgery on his left kidney and urinary tract. Alongside constant physical pain, the burden of medical expenses and family responsibilities made every day a struggle for survival.
To support the family, his wife works as a domestic helper in other people's homes. Despite his physical limitations, Abdul Mannan continued to earn a living by driving a borrowed auto-rickshaw with his prosthetic leg. Every day reflected his determination to overcome hardship with dignity and resilience.
His story eventually reached Dr. A.H. Monjurul Kabir, Senior UN Coordination Adviser and Global Team Leader at UN, Founder and Donor of Kabir Foundation. Following his instructions, a field verification was conducted to assess Abdul Mannan's situation. After confirming the facts, Mr. Kabir decided to extend a helping hand out of compassion and social responsibility.
As part of this initiative, Mr. Kabir personally provided financial assistance for the purchase of an auto-rickshaw. This was far more than a financial contribution. It was an investment in a family's future and an opportunity for a hardworking man to regain his independence and dignity.
Today, that auto-rickshaw represents much more than a means of transportation. It is a source of livelihood, a symbol of hope and a pathway to self-reliance. It enables Abdul Mannan to support his family with dignity, provide for his children, and ease the burden carried by his wife.
Abdul Mannan's journey reminds us that people are not defeated by physical limitations; they are defeated only when hope disappears. A timely act of kindness, a compassionate heart and meaningful support can transform not only an individual's life but also the future of an entire family.
Kabir Foundation believes that humanity has the power to change lives. A single compassionate decision can restore hope, rebuild dignity, and create lasting impact. Abdul Mannan's story stands as a living testament to that belief.
