World Marine Protected Area (MPA) Day is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness of the vital role Marine Protected Areas play in conserving marine biodiversity, supporting sustainable development, and promoting the well-being of coastal communities, Observed on 1 August every year. First launched in 2021 and endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade, MPA Day has turned into a worldwide movement celebrating local actions for global ocean conservation.

🇧🇩 Bangladesh has seven Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) covering a total of approximately 10.5% of the country's 118,813 km² Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

These protected areas provide vital habitats for iconic marine species, including the Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni), Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis), Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus), spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides), and the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). They also safeguard important spawning and nursery grounds for hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) and other commercially important marine fish species.

The expansion of Bangladesh's MPA network is a significant step toward achieving SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and contributes to the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework's 30×30 Target, which aims to effectively conserve and manage 30% of the world's terrestrial, inland water, coastal, and marine areas by 2030.

🌍 On this World MPA Day, let us celebrate our marine heritage and reaffirm our shared responsibility to protect the Bay of Bengal for present and future generations.

🌊 Calling all —don't miss this free international training series on observing marine ecosystem structure and function!

The TREVOR 2026 Symposium Training Series Observing Marine Ecosystem Structure and Function: From Microbial Communities to Fisheries and Human Health

The TREVOR 2026 Symposium is pleased to announce a free online training series bringing together expert lecturers and panellists from around the world to explore the observation of marine ecosystems across biological scales, from microbial communities to fisheries and human health.

The series consists of 13 weekly 2-hour webinars, running every Tuesday from 7 July to 29 September 2026, via Microsoft Teams. Most sessions will be held from 11:00 to 13:00 UTC. Each session comprises a 1-hour lecture followed by a 1-hour Q&A with the speaker(s) and panelists.

All are welcome to join. We particularly encourage interested in ocean observation topics to attend.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA), in collaboration with CMLRE (MoES, India), IORA, and MABIK, is inviting applications for the Deep-sea Macrofauna Taxonomy School 2026.

📍 Location: Kochi, India
📅 Training Dates: 7–11 September 2026

Participants will receive hands-on training in:
🔹 Standardized deep-sea macrofauna sampling
🔹 Taxonomy and biodiversity assessment
🔹 DNA barcoding
🔹 Specimen curation
🔹 Data management

Who can apply?

✅ Nationals of developing ISA Member States from the Indian Ocean Region.
✅ Hold at least a Bachelor's degree in natural sciences and are currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in marine biology, ecology, or a related field.
✅ Proficient in English (written and spoken).
✅ Demonstrate a strong interest in investigating deep-sea macrofauna in the context of anthropogenic impact assessment.
✅ Background knowledge of benthic fauna and/or taxonomy is recommended but not required.

ECOP Bangladesh Outreach Programme – A Successful Beginning 🌊

On 17-18 June 2026, during the International Symposium on Coast, Climate, and Community at SUST, ECOP Bangladesh proudly conducted its first Outreach Programme. We were delighted to receive an overwhelming positive response, with students, researchers, and participants visiting our booth, interacting with our team, and learning more about ECOP Bangladesh and its mission.

We sincerely thank Blue-Delta for supporting this outreach initiative and making it possible. We also extend our gratitude to the Department of Oceanography, SUST, for providing us with the opportunity and space to engage with the symposium participants.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and interacted with us. We look forward to growing this community and creating more opportunities for early career ocean professionals in Bangladesh.
