Recently, 140 farmers in Habiganj received training to build practical skills for improved and sustainable banana production, covering the entire process from cultivation to post-harvest management.
Under the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, this FAO initiative strengthened farmers’ knowledge and skills on locally suitable banana varieties, climate-smart agriculture, integrated pest and disease management, post-harvest handling, grading and packaging, and market linkages.
Through practical and group exercises, farmers learned how to maintain banana quality, identify quality defects, and apply appropriate harvesting, sorting, handling, and transportation practices to reduce losses.
FAO's Horticulture Specialist and field facilitators led the training, with participation from representatives of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Directorate of Primary Education (DPE). These skills will help farmers maintain the quality of their produce and meet the requirements of institutional markets, including school feeding.

সম্প্রতি হবিগঞ্জের মাধবপুরে ১৪০ জন কৃষককে উন্নত কলা উৎপাদন থেকে সংগ্রহ ও উৎপাদনত্তর ব্যবস্থাপনাসহ কলা চাষ বিষয়ে দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধির জন্য প্রশিক্ষণ প্রদান করা হয়। এই উদ্যোগটি জাতিসংঘের খাদ্য ও কৃষি সংস্থার McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program-এর আওতায় পরিচালিত হচ্ছে।

প্রশিক্ষণে স্থানীয়ভাবে উপযোগী কলার জাত নির্বাচন, জলবায়ু-স্মার্ট কৃষি, সমন্বিত বালাই ও রোগ ব্যবস্থাপনা, ফসল সংগ্রহ-পরবর্তী ব্যবস্থাপনা, মান অনুযায়ী বাছাইকরণ, মোড়কজাতকরণ, স্কুল ফিডিং কর্মসূচিতে সরবরাহ ও বাজার সংযোগ বিষয়ে আলোচনা করা হয়। ব্যবহারিক ও দলীয় অনুশীলনের মাধ্যমে কৃষকেরা কলার গুণগত মান বজায় রাখা, মানগত ত্রুটি শনাক্ত করা এবং ফসলের ক্ষতি কমাতে সঠিকভাবে সংগ্রহ, বাছাই, সংরক্ষণ ও পরিবহনের কৌশল সম্পর্কে বাস্তব ধারণা অর্জন করেন।

এফএও -এর হর্টিকালচার স্পেশালিস্ট ও ফিল্ড ফ্যাসিলিটেটর সহ কৃষি সম্প্রসারণ অধিদপ্তর (DAE) ও প্রাথমিক শিক্ষা অধিদপ্তরের (DPE) সরকারি কর্মকর্তাও এই প্রশিক্ষণ পরিচালনা করেন। এই দক্ষতা কৃষকদের উৎপাদিত কলার গুণগত মান বজায় রাখতে এবং স্কুল ফিডিংসহ প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক বাজারের মান ও চাহিদা পূরণে সহায়তা করবে।

A significant milestone was marked in Cox’s Bazar with the signing of an agreement between the FAO supported Kalu Fakir agricultural production and marketing cooperative society ltd and the JICA-funded Fisheries livelihood enhancement project (FiLEP).

The Kalu Fakir Aggregation Center will provide a platform for smallholder and marginal farmers to strengthen agricultural productivity, market access, post-harvest management and local food systems. Focusing on the proper use, management and maintenance of FiLEP tray ovens and drying racks at the Aggregation Center, it will also enable local communities to produce safe dry fish and dry fruits, resulting in livelihood improvement and income generation.

This partnership reflects the shared commitment of JICA, FiLEP, the Department of Fisheries (DoF), and FAO supported Aggregation Centers to strengthen sustainable livelihood opportunities and community resilience in Cox’s Bazar.

কক্সবাজারে সম্প্রতি জাপান আন্তর্জাতিক সহযোগিতা সংস্থা (JICA)-এর অর্থায়নে পরিচালিত Fisheries Livelihood Enhancement Project (FiLEP) এবং জাতিসংঘের খাদ্য ও কৃষি সংস্থার সাহায্যে পরিচালিত Kalu Fakir Agricultural Production and Marketing Cooperative Society Ltd.-এর মধ্যে একটি চুক্তি স্বাক্ষরিত হয়েছে। চুক্তিটির মূল লক্ষ্য হলো কক্সবাজারের চৌফলদণ্ডীর কালু ফকির এগ্রিগেশন সেন্টারে স্থাপিত FiLEP-এর ট্রে ওভেন ও ড্রাইং র‍্যাকের সঠিক ব্যবহার, ব্যবস্থাপনা ও রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ নিশ্চিত করা। এসব সরঞ্জাম ব্যবহার করে স্থানীয় জনগোষ্ঠী নিরাপদ উপায়ে শুঁটকি মাছ ও ফলমূল প্রক্রিয়াজাত করতে পারবে। এর মাধ্যমে পণ্যের মূল্য সংযোজন, জীবিকা উন্নয়ন এবং আয় বৃদ্ধির নতুন সুযোগ তৈরি হবে।

এফএও এর সহায়তায় পরিচালিত কালু ফকির এগ্রিগেশন সেন্টার ক্ষুদ্র ও প্রান্তিক কৃষকদের কৃষি উৎপাদন বৃদ্ধি, বাজারে প্রবেশাধিকার সম্প্রসারণ, ফসল-পরবর্তী ব্যবস্থাপনা উন্নয়ন এবং স্থানীয় খাদ্যব্যবস্থা শক্তিশালী করার জন্য একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্ল্যাটফর্ম হিসেবে কাজ করছে।

এই চুক্তি JICA, FiLEP, মৎস্য অধিদপ্তর (DoF), FAO এবং এগ্রিগেশন সেন্টারগুলোর সমন্বিত প্রচেষ্টার প্রতিফলন যা কক্সবাজারের স্থানীয় জনগোষ্ঠীর জন্য টেকসই জীবিকার সুযোগ সৃষ্টি এবং তাদের সহনশীলতা বৃদ্ধিতে আরও কার্যকর ভূমিকা রাখবে।

A knowledge sharing and advanced geo-spatial risk observation for agriculture and livelihood watch (AGROW) workshop was recently organized by FAO’s Data in Emergencies (DIEM) initiative.

The workshop brought together government representatives, researchers, technical experts, and development partners to discuss the importance of evidence-based policymaking and introduce AGROW, a new agricultural risk intelligence platform being developed by FAO and UNITAR-UNOSAT.

As climate shocks from severe cyclones to devastating floods continue to threaten the livelihoods of over a third of the national workforce and heighten food insecurity for millions, timely and actionable data is more essential than ever. AGROW addresses these challenges by merging satellite analytics, AI modeling, and local vulnerability indicators to deliver precise and localized risk intelligence.

Mirza Ashfaqur Rahman, Additional Secretary, Planning, Ministry of Agriculture and Dia Sanou, Deputy FAO Representative, Bangladesh attended the event while Faruk Ahmed, Additional Director, planning and ICT wings of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) chaired the sessions. Josselin Gauny, DIEM deputy team leader and Abesh Kc Poudel, Food security assessment specialist; a mission from FAO HQ, informed audience on what FAO is doing worldwide in collecting and utilizing data, insights and applications for agricultural decision making.

This initiative is expected to play a critical role in strengthening disaster risk reduction, building resilience for smallholder farmers, and reduce the number of food insecure people across Bangladesh.

🤝 Courtesy Meeting between FAO Bangladesh and the Ministry of Agriculture

Jiaoqun Shi, FAO Representative 🇧🇩 and Dia Sanou, Deputy FAOR paid a courtesy visit today to Md. Salim Khan, newly appointed Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing collaboration, key areas of work, upcoming events, and future priorities to further strengthen the partnership between FAO and MoA.

Their discussion covered shared priorities across the agriculture and food systems landscape, including food security and nutrition, sustainable and climate resilient agriculture, innovation and digital solutions, and capacity development of farmers, entrepreneurs and all relevant stakeholders.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration and advancing joint initiatives that contribute to a more productive, inclusive, resilient and sustainable system in Bangladesh. 🇧🇩

Preparing to Learn, Connect and Create Impact!

FAO is organizing an international training programme on Spatial Crop Modelling at Sanya Institute of Nanjing Agricultural University, China, from 6–12 September 2026. A briefing session was held to prepare participants, align expectations and wish them a productive experience filled with learning and knowledge exchange.

A team of nine professionals, scientists and policymakers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Bangladesh - কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয় and its agencies will take part in this learning journey. The initiative is supported by the Gates Foundation under the Agriculture Sector Transformation Programme (AsTP).

We wish our participants a successful training and look forward to seeing the knowledge and ideas they bring back to strengthen Bangladesh’s agrifood systems transformation

Global food prices hit their highest point since late 2022, with the FAO Food Price Index climbing to 133.3 in August.

While still 17% below the post-invasion peak of March 2022, international commodity prices are officially trending back up.

August’s increase in global food prices is a warning that the risk premium is returning to food markets: climate shocks, geopolitical tensions and disrupted trade logistics are converging to tighten supply expectations," FAO Chief Economist, Maximo Torero said in a statement.

২০২২ সালের শেষের দিকের পর বৈশ্বিক খাদ্যের দাম আবার সর্বোচ্চ পর্যায়ে পৌঁছেছে; আগস্টে এফএও (FAO) ফুড প্রাইস ইনডেক্স বেড়ে ১৩৩.৩ পয়েন্টে দাঁড়িয়েছে।

📱💰Digital financial inclusion for agri food systems 👩‍🌾

Binghan Hu, Head of South Asia, UnionPay International, paid a courtesy visit to FAO Representation in Bangladesh for an exchange of views on the evolving role of digital finance in strengthening financial inclusion across agrifood systems.

The discussion included international experiences in using digital payment solutions to improve farmers’ access to financial services, agricultural subsidies and other government-supported services.

UnionPay shared its unique role of operating as a global acceptance network, with cards accepted in 179 countries and regions, including ATM acceptance in 155 and merchant acceptance in 125.

FAO welcomed the opportunity to learn from international experiences and explore how interoperable, inclusive and farmer-centred digital financial solutions can contribute to Bangladesh’s digital transformation of agriculture.

Discussion included China’s experience in supporting the development of digital Farmers Cards and the potential lessons this may offer as Bangladesh explores its own Farmers Card initiative.

The conversation highlighted that future digital financial architecture should remain open, competitive and technology-neutral, allowing relevant public and private-sector financial service providers and payment networks to contribute within Bangladesh’s regulatory framework.
