Last Sunday, the Better with water Bangladesh team travelled to Hafeznogor, a slum in southern Chattogram, to continue the discussions previously initiated with the community.
This slum is facing a critical water access situation that heavily impacts the daily lives of its 900 households. Residents rely on water supplied through shared pumps, but the water contains extremely high levels of iron, giving it a brown colour and potentially causing liver or kidney complications, as well as increasing the risk of diabetes. On top of this, the time and distance required to collect water are both time-consuming and a source of insecurity, particularly for women and girls.
Those who can afford it buy bottled water or purchase water from illegal vendors, but at a very high cost, turning safe drinking water into a luxury that very few can afford.
Water should not be a privilege, but a right. That is why better with water is currently on the ground, working alongside the community to explore concrete solutions and make access to safe water a reality for everyone.
