Backbiting (Gheebah) in Islam

Backbiting (Gheebah) is a serious and major sin in Islam. It means mentioning something about a person in their absence that they would dislike, even if what is said is true.

Allah سبحانه وتعالى warns us in the Qur’an:

“O believers, avoid much suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is sin. Do not spy on one another, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:12)

This powerful imagery shows how deeply harmful backbiting is. Allah compares it to something extremely disturbing so that we truly understand its weight.

The Prophet ﷺ, Prophet Muhammad, explained that backbiting is speaking about your brother in a way he would dislike. If what is said is false, then it becomes slander (buhtan), which is even more severe.

What does backbiting include?

Backbiting is not always obvious. It can appear in subtle ways such as:

• Gossiping about others
• Unfair or harsh criticism
• Speaking negatively behind someone’s back
• Damaging a person’s honor or reputation in their absence

It is not only forbidden to commit backbiting, but also to:

• Listen to it
• Support it
• Approve of it, even silently

What happens if you backbite in Islam?

Backbiting carries serious consequences in this life and the Hereafter.

The Prophet ﷺ warned that backbiting is more grievous than adultery, and that Allah will not forgive the backbiter until the one who was wronged forgives them.

This shows that backbiting is not only a sin against Allah, but also a violation of another person’s rights.

He ﷺ also advised not to backbite Muslims or search for their faults, because whoever seeks out the faults of others, Allah will expose their own faults.

The consequences are heavy:

• Your good deeds may be taken and given to the person you wronged
• Your own faults may be exposed by Allah
• Your forgiveness may depend on the person you hurt

Backbiting may seem small on the tongue, but it is heavy before Allah.

How to protect yourself from backbiting

• Stay conscious that Allah is always watching
• Remember death and accountability
• Walk away from harmful conversations
• Put yourself in the other person’s place
• Focus on people’s good qualities
• Choose silence over harmful speech
• Reflect on your own faults
• Make du‘ā for others instead of criticizing them
• Avoid gatherings where backbiting is common

What should I do if I have committed backbiting (Gheebah)?

1. Should I inform the person I backbit?

There are two opinions among scholars:

The first opinion, held by the majority, is that if the person does not know, then there is no need to inform them. Instead, make du‘ā for them, speak well of them, and do good for them. Informing them may only hurt them further or damage the relationship.

The second opinion states that if the person has come to know and feels hurt, then it is necessary to seek their forgiveness. Imam Nawawi mentioned that informing them is not required in every case, but making istighfār for them and doing good on their behalf is important.

2. How should I seek forgiveness from Allah?

• Feel sincere regret from the heart
• Make istighfār regularly
• Make du‘ā for the person you backbit
• Have a firm intention not to repeat it

3. What should I do if I hear backbiting?

Listening to backbiting is also sinful, so:

• Try to stop it gently, for example by saying it is better not to speak like this
• If you cannot stop it, leave the place
• Even if you stayed silent but listened, make istighfār and ask Allah to protect you from such situations
• Do not show approval, even through silence or gestures

The main point

If you fall into backbiting, do not lose hope. Make sincere tawbah, pray for that person, and maintain goodness in your relationship with them.

Allah loves those who turn back to Him in repentance.

A gentle reminder

“So remind, for indeed the reminder benefits the believers.” (Qur’an 51:55)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever guides to something good will have a reward like the one who does it.”
[Sahih Muslim 1893]

Share it so others can benefit.
