Crisis Group’s “Time to Reset Bangladesh’s Approach to the Rohingya” highlights the need for a new approach.

Humanity must come first.

Ensure non-recurrence of Rohingya persecution, forced displacement & genocide. Put Rohingya legitimate demands.

While repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar remains the long-term goal, Bangladesh’s new government should adopt a more realistic interim strategy – one that improves long-term prospects for return while limiting the harmful consequences for both Bangladesh and the Rohingya.

The Rohingya crisis spans decades: 1977–78, 1991–92, 2012, 2016 & the 2017 genocide and mass exodus.
Today, 40,000+ Rohingya from the 1991/92 influx remain trapped in Cox’s Bazar after decades of uncertainty.
We urge the UN,

Five years ago, in August 2017, the Myanmar military unleashed a brutal offensive against the Rohingya communities across the country’s Rakhine State.

A major fire occurred overnight into 20 January 2026 at Jamtoli Rohingya camp 16 in Cox’s Bazar Bangladesh. More than 500 shelters were completely burned down. Many families have lost everything they owned, including their homes and basic necessities. The affected community is now in urgent need of emergency support, shelter, and essential relief items.
