We are deeply saddened to hear reports that a boat carrying around 280 Rohingya refugees on its way to Malaysia sank in the Bay of Bengal. It is reported that only 9 people survived, while many others lost their lives. This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our community.
These individuals were not seeking luxury or adventure. They were searching for safety, dignity, and a chance to support their families. The loss of so many lives is a painful reminder of the hardships that many Rohingya continue to face every day.
Many community members are worried that more people may be driven to take such dangerous journeys if living conditions continue to worsen and opportunities to earn a livelihood remain limited.
The loss of approximately 271 Rohingya lives is not just a statisticโit represents mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and children whose dreams ended far too soon. As a community, we should never accept such tragedies as normal.
In our view, issues such as unemployment, limited income opportunities, and the growing impact of gambling are among the factors that contribute to desperation within the community. These challenges deserve urgent attention.
We respectfully call on the relevant authorities, including the Bangladesh Government, to strengthen efforts to address illegal gambling and support initiatives that create safer and more sustainable opportunities for vulnerable communities.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, survivors, and all those affected by this tragedy.
