Breaking News | Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI)

Another alarming incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar refugee camps.

A Rohingya man was rescued by community members and police after being found tied up in bushes near the TV Tower rubber garden, close to the Transit Center Mosque. He was immediately referred to Kutupalong MSF Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The survivor identified himself as:
• Name: Mohammed Alam
• Head Majhi: Md. Salim
• Sub Majhi: Taher
• Camp: Camp 2, Block C10

If anyone knows Mohammed Alam or his family, please contact them immediately so they can be reunited as soon as possible.

This incident is a painful reminder that Rohingya refugees continue to live in constant fear. Many families face insecurity every day and night, with ongoing risks of violence, abduction, extortion, and other crimes. Every child deserves to grow up safely, every woman deserves protection from violence, and every man deserves to live without fear.

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) urgently calls on the Government of Bangladesh, camp authorities, law enforcement agencies, and the international community to strengthen security across all refugee camps, ensure prompt investigations into serious incidents, hold those responsible accountable through due process, and enhance protection measures for all Rohingya refugees—especially children, women, older people, and other vulnerable individuals.

No refugee should have to live in fear every second, every minute, and every hour. Safety, dignity, and protection are fundamental human rights that every Rohingya refugee deserves.

Urgent Appeal to Save Rahamad Ali

A 6-year-old Rohingya child, Rahamad Ali, remains in captivity after being kidnapped. According to his family, tonight is the final deadline set by the kidnappers for the ransom payment.

His parents are extremely poor daily labourers and are unable to raise the required amount on their own. They are living through unimaginable fear and uncertainty as they wait for their son's safe return.

We urgently appeal to compassionate individuals, humanitarian organisations, and all those who can help to stand with this family during this critical moment. Every contribution, every prayer, and every share of this appeal may help save an innocent child's life.

A 6-year-old Rohingya child, Rahamot Ali, son of Mohammed Junaid from Camp 11, Block E4, was reportedly kidnapped on 22 July. The kidnappers are demanding BDT 600,000 for his release.

His parents are impoverished daily wage labourers who have no possible way to raise such an enormous ransom. They are living in unimaginable fear and desperation while waiting for their child to return home safely.

How many more Rohingya children must be kidnapped before meaningful action is taken? Where are the safety and protection mechanisms that refugees have repeatedly been promised?

We urgently call on UNHCR Bangladesh, IOM Bangladesh, Save the Children in Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi authorities, and all relevant humanitarian agencies to act immediately. Every child has the right to live free from fear, violence, and exploitation. The perpetrators must be identified, arrested, and held accountable, and Rahamot Ali must be rescued without delay.

The worsening insecurity inside the refugee camps cannot continue to be ignored. Rohingya families deserve real protection, not empty promises.

Protect Rohingya children. End impunity. Ensure justice and security now.

Today, Malaysia announced a temporary halt to UNHCR registration as it prioritizes its own refugee registration document (DPP) programme.

Malaysia should ensure that its refugee registration scheme meets stringent procedural safeguards and protects people fleeing persecution. Refugees who have not yet received the DPP must not be arrested, detained, or forcibly returned because of registration delays.

The lack of sustainable livelihood and income opportunities in the Rohingya refugee camps is contributing to increased violence against women and girls. Financial hardship places enormous pressure on families, leaving many women feeling helpless, unsafe, and without the support they need.

Creating sustainable income opportunities, strengthening protection services, and ensuring continued humanitarian assistance are essential to helping women and their families live with dignity and security.

Every woman deserves to live with safety, dignity, and hope.

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) | Emergency Update

The Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) is deeply saddened to report that a Rohingya woman lost her life in a landslide this evening in Camp 8E, Block D2, near our area. She leaves behind two children.

This tragic incident is another reminder of the severe dangers Rohingya refugees face during the monsoon season. Thousands of families continue to live on unstable hillsides, where heavy rainfall can turn into a deadly disaster within moments.

RRI extends its heartfelt condolences to the victim's family and calls on humanitarian agencies and relevant authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness, improve shelter safety, and protect vulnerable refugee communities from further loss of life.

May she rest in peace, and may her children find strength and support during this difficult time.

Hundreds of Rohingya refugees are feared dead or missing at sea. Yet the world's response remains painfully inadequate.

As Fortify Rights Human Rights Specialist Lynn Htet said to The New York Times:

«“If the people on the boats were from the West, many countries would have come together to form search groups. But Rohingya don’t have any influence. They are invisible people.”»

At Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI), we refuse to let the Rohingya remain invisible. Every life matters. Every person deserves protection, dignity, and the right to seek safety without risking death at sea.

We urgently call on the international community to strengthen search and rescue efforts, provide protection for Rohingya refugees, address the root causes of forced displacement, and ensure accountability for the crimes that continue to drive our people from their homeland.

The world must not turn away while Rohingya lives are lost in silence.

More than 500 lives feared lost. Another heartbreaking tragedy for the Rohingya.

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) is deeply saddened by reports that more than 500 people, predominantly Rohingya refugees, are feared to have died after two boats capsized off Myanmar's coast in recent weeks. This is a devastating reminder of the desperate conditions forcing Rohingya families to risk their lives at sea in search of safety and dignity.

No one should be forced to choose between persecution and death at sea. The international community must urgently strengthen search and rescue efforts, ensure protection for Rohingya refugees, expand access to safe pathways, and address the root causes of their displacement through justice, accountability, and the restoration of their rights in Myanmar.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims, the missing, and their grieving families.
