🇲🇲 Rohingya Crisis: What Happened in Rakhine?

The Rohingya crisis is rooted in decades of persecution, discrimination, denial of citizenship, displacement, and violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

The mass exodus of 2017 forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh, joining earlier generations of refugees in Cox’s Bazar. Today, the crisis remains unresolved, while ongoing conflict and instability in Rakhine continue to place civilians and Rohingya communities at serious risk.

Rakhine State is also strategically important, involving complex political, security, humanitarian, and geopolitical interests affecting Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, and China.

At Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI), we believe the future of the Rohingya must be based on safety, dignity, equality, fundamental rights, and a meaningful pathway to citizenship.

🚨 CALL FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF ROHINGYA HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST ZAFAR AHMAD ABDUL GHANI

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) urges the Malaysian Government to immediately release Rohingya human rights activist Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani and to fully respect his fundamental rights, dignity, and freedom.

Human rights defenders must be able to speak out peacefully for the rights, safety, and dignity of their communities without fear of reprisal, intimidation, or arbitrary restrictions.

We call on the Malaysian authorities to uphold human rights, justice, due process, and the fundamental freedoms of all individuals, including Rohingya human rights defenders.

RRI stands in solidarity with Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani and all Rohingya human rights defenders working peacefully for justice and dignity.

🚨 MYANMAR | DEADLY AIRSTRIKES IN KYAUKTAW

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) is deeply concerned by reports that military airstrikes on a busy market in Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State, reportedly killed at least 50 people and injured many others.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, the strikes occurred during a busy period when civilians from multiple communities including Rakhine, Rohingya, Hindu, Daingnet and other communities were present in and around the market.

The High Commissioner warned that the attack raises serious concerns regarding respect for international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack.

The timing is particularly alarming. The Kyauktaw attack came just hours before Malaysia began implementing a plan to deport Myanmar nationals, with a broader plan reportedly involving around 5,000 people.

UN High Commissioner Volker Türk has called on Malaysian authorities to immediately halt the deportation process, emphasizing that people who have fled Myanmar in fear for their lives must be protected and their rights to seek asylum and international protection respected.

RRI urges the international community to:

🔴 Protect civilians in Myanmar, including Rohingya and other communities.
🔴 Ensure accountability for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.
🔴 Halt returns that could expose people to serious risks of persecution, violence or other grave harm.
🔴 Respect the principle of non-refoulement and the right to seek asylum and protection.

No one should be returned to danger. Civilians must be protected, and those responsible for unlawful attacks must be held accountable.

🚨 BREAKING | KYAUKTAW AIRSTRIKE

On 28 September 2026, around noon, Myanmar military aircraft reportedly carried out an airstrike near a market and bridge in Kyauktaw, Rakhine State, an area under the control of the Arakan Army (AA).

According to reports from the Arakan Army and local rescue officials, the attack killed at least 49 civilians and injured 58 others, including people who were shopping, working, and travelling in the area.

Rohingya Muslims were also reportedly among those killed and injured.

The Arakan Army issued a statement on 29 September regarding the attack. Independent verification of all casualty details remains difficult amid the ongoing conflict.

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) strongly condemns attacks that result in civilian deaths and injuries. Civilians must be protected, regardless of their ethnicity, religion, or location.

We call for urgent protection of civilians, access to humanitarian assistance for those affected, and credible investigation into the reported attack.

Every civilian life matters.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS | CAMP 2 EAST, BLOCK C07

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) is deeply saddened and alarmed by the reported killing of a child in Camp 2 East, Block C07, on the night of 28 September 2026, at approximately 9:30 PM.

According to initial reports, the child was allegedly attacked by his stepfather and suffered a fatal neck injury. The suspected perpetrator reportedly fled the area following the incident.

The child’s mother has reportedly confirmed the identity of the suspected perpetrator. No matter where he is staying, and no matter who he is, we urgently call on the Bangladesh Government and relevant authorities to take immediate action to locate and arrest the suspect, conduct a thorough investigation, and ensure justice through due process.

We also urge UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, UNFPA, the Protection Sector, and other relevant humanitarian actors to closely monitor the situation and support the affected family.

🚨 A child has lost his life. This must not be ignored.

Every child deserves safety, protection and dignity. Violence against children must never be tolerated.

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) is deeply saddened and alarmed by reports of a tragic incident in Camp 2 East, where a baby boy was allegedly killed by his stepfather.

RRI calls on the APBn and Bangladesh Police to take immediate and appropriate action, conduct a thorough, impartial investigation, and ensure that anyone responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.

Children in the Rohingya refugee camps must be able to live free from violence, abuse, and fear. Every child deserves safety, protection, dignity, and a future.

Violence against children must never be tolerated.

🚨 Malaysia: Forced Returns Put Myanmar Nationals at Risk

Malaysia is preparing to return thousands of Myanmar nationals, including Rohingya, with the first group of 1,476 people reportedly scheduled to leave on 29 September.

These forced returns come as Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim plans to host Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing in Kuala Lumpur.

Nearly 200,000 people from Myanmar have sought safety in Malaysia after fleeing armed conflict, persecution, and widespread human rights abuses, according to UNHCR.

Returning people to Myanmar could expose them to serious human rights violations and danger amid an ongoing armed conflict.

People fleeing persecution and conflict must not be forced back into danger. Their safety, dignity, and fundamental rights must be protected.

🚨 BREAKING | AIRSTRIKES REPORTED IN ARAKAN STATE

28 September 2026

According to information released by the Arakan Army (AA) News and Information Department, Myanmar military fighter jets reportedly carried out airstrikes today in Kyauktaw Township and Ngapali, Thandwe Township, Arakan State.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. and 12:14 p.m., a Myanmar military fighter jet reportedly carried out bombing attacks around Kyaspanadi Bridge and the India Market area in Kyauktaw, where civilians, pedestrians, vendors and shoppers were present.

The AA reported that civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries, occurred in the surrounding area.

At around 12:35 p.m., another reported airstrike targeted Ngapali in Thandwe Township, where the Myanmar military reportedly dropped two bombs.

Rohingya Rights Initiative (RRI) is deeply concerned about the continuing danger faced by civilians in Arakan State. Civilians must be protected, and all parties must uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law.

We call for credible and independent verification of reported civilian casualties and for the protection of all civilians from further attacks.

🚨 “It’s time that we paid attention to the Rohingyas.”

Nearly a decade after the mass displacement of the Rohingya, the crisis remains unresolved.

Around 1.3 million Rohingya Muslims have been forced to flee persecution in Myanmar and seek refuge in Bangladesh, where they continue to face prolonged displacement and uncertainty.

In his first address to the since the democratic transition in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called on the international community to strengthen humanitarian support for the Rohingya and uphold their right to return to Myanmar safely, voluntarily, and with dignity.

Ambassador Irene Zubaida Khan also told TRT World that Bangladesh supports the genocide case against Myanmar before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with the Court’s final ruling expected in the coming months.

The Rohingya crisis must not be forgotten. Justice, accountability, protection, and a safe and dignified return must remain at the centre of international efforts.

🚨 The Rohingya Genocide Must End

The Rohingya genocide is not history it is an ongoing crisis.

More than 1.1 million Rohingya refugees remain in Bangladesh, displaced from their homeland and living in prolonged uncertainty, without safety, justice, or the fundamental rights they deserve.

Our people continue to face persecution, displacement, violence, and the denial of their rights. The Rohingya crisis cannot be forgotten, and the world must not allow another generation to grow up without hope for a safe, dignified and rights-based future.
