World Literacy Day 2025
Today, on World Literacy Day, we celebrate the power of reading and learning ; the keys that open doors to dignity, opportunity, and hope.
For the Rohingya community in Cox’s Bazar camps, the journey toward literacy is full of obstacles. Many children and youth cannot access formal schools. Parents, focused on survival, often have to choose between food and education. Safe learning spaces are scarce, and resources like books, trained teachers, and proper classrooms are limited.
Yet, despite these challenges, the will to learn has never faded. Every day, Rohingya children gather in makeshift classrooms, under tarpaulin roofs, or even on the ground, eager to write their first words in a borrowed notebook. For them, literacy is not just about reading, it is about reclaiming a future that was denied.
At NAIR, we have seen this determination firsthand. Over the past year, our small team has distributed essential learning materials, including textbooks, to hundreds of children. We have supported youth-led study circles, where older learners teach younger ones. And we continue to advocate for the right of every refugee child to quality education.
Progress is slow, but it is real. Each child who learns to read and write carries the promise of a stronger, more hopeful community.
On this World Literacy Day, we reaffirm our commitment: to stand with the Rohingya learners, to nurture their dreams, and to keep education alive in the most difficult of places.
