Official Statement | Rohingya Humanity Information (RHI)
Rohingya Humanity Information (RHI) expresses its deepest sorrow and condemnation over the tragic death of Nurul Amin Sha Alam, a Rohingya refugee and genocide survivor. His death has sparked serious concern worldwide, prompting voices from U.S. lawmakers, global media outlets, and human rights professionals to demand accountability and justice.
As Rohingya community based nonprofit organisation, we are deeply alarmed that in a country widely recognized as a champion of democracy and human rights—the United States—a vulnerable Rohingya refugee was left unsafe, unprotected, and ultimately lost his life. This tragedy raises grave questions about the treatment, protection, and dignity afforded to refugees, particularly those who are survivors of genocide, persons with disabilities, and individuals facing language and cultural barriers.
Nurul Amin Sha Alam fled unimaginable atrocities in Myanmar seeking safety and dignity. No refugee who survives genocide should face neglect, insecurity, discrimination, or abandonment in any country—especially not in places that uphold the rule of law and humanitarian values. The reported circumstances surrounding his release and treatment by authorities, including concerns related to United States Border Patrol, reflect a systemic failure to protect the most vulnerable.
This is not an isolated concern. It reflects a broader pattern of risk faced by Rohingya refugees and other displaced communities worldwide—even after reaching countries of resettlement. Safety should not end at a border, and protection must not depend on language, disability, or influence.
RHI calls for:
A transparent, independent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nurul Amin Sha Alam’s death;
Full accountability for any negligence or misconduct by responsible authorities;
Immediate policy reforms to ensure the safety, dignity, and humane treatment of refugees, especially those with vulnerabilities;
Stronger safeguards so no refugee is ever again abandoned or left at risk after release from custody.
We urge U.S. authorities, international human rights bodies, civil society, and the global community to treat this case as a wake-up call. Justice for Nurul Amin Sha Alam must be delivered—not only for his family, but to prevent future tragedies and to uphold the principles of humanity and protection for all refugees.
Rohingya lives matter. Refugee lives matter.
Justice delayed is justice denied.
