We, the DFTP group-04 candidates, successfully performed our 'Mock Voting Campaign' on first-time voters on the University of Barishal today, January 23, 2025.
It was an incredible experience for all those participating!
First, we discuss with them about the voting procedure and make them aware that as 'First time voters' so that knowing the method of voting in advance they do not have to face any kind of harassment in going to their polling station and they can vote properly.
Then they help our 'Mock Voting Campaign' to complete successfully by actively participating by voting.

Problem Identification :

First-time voters in Bangladesh face several challenges that can impact their voting experience and participation in the electoral process. Some of these problems include:

1. Lack of Voter Awareness -
Many first-time voters, especially in rural areas, lack awareness about the voting process, including how to register, where to vote, and the importance of their vote. This can result in confusion on Election Day, leading to low turnout or spoiled ballots.

2. Voter Registration Issues -
In Bangladesh, the voter registration process can be cumbersome, with some first-time voters facing difficulties in registering. Problems such as errors in voter lists, missing names, or inaccurate information can prevent individuals from being able to vote.

3. Unfamiliarity with Electoral Procedures-
First-time voters may not be familiar with the procedures at the polling station, such as how to cast a vote properly, how to use the electronic voting machines (if applicable), and how to avoid invalid ballots. This lack of understanding can lead to mistakes.

4. Influence of Family and Political
Networks-
In Bangladesh, political parties often have strong familial and community ties. First-time voters may feel pressured by family or local political figures to vote a certain way. This can undermine the freedom of choice and potentially lead to voter manipulation.

5. Intimidation and Violence -
In some areas, particularly in rural or politically volatile regions, first-time voters may face intimidation, threats, or even violence from political groups or local authorities, making them hesitant to vote. This can also create a climate of fear, reducing the overall confidence of young voters in the electoral system.

6. Lack of Access to Information -
First-time voters often struggle to find reliable and impartial information about the candidates, political parties, or the electoral process itself. Media coverage might be biased or insufficient, making it harder for them to make informed choices.

7. Logistical Challenges -
In some areas, particularly remote rural regions, first-time voters may face logistical hurdles such as distance from polling stations, poor transportation infrastructure, or lack of guidance on where to vote. This can lead to lower voter turnout, especially among young people.

8. Discrimination and Social Barriers -
Young voters, especially those from marginalized communities, may face social and cultural barriers that discourage them from participating in the election. Women, in particular, may experience more challenges due to traditional gender roles or lack of empowerment in certain parts of society.

9. Digital Divide -
As Bangladesh moves towards modernizing its election system with digital tools (like biometric voting systems), first-time voters who are not familiar with technology may struggle to understand the new systems. A digital divide can leave many voters behind if they are unable to access or use these technologies properly.

10. Youth Disengagement -
Many young people in Bangladesh feel disconnected from the political system, leading to apathy or disinterest in voting. They may not see their vote as meaningful due to concerns about corruption, the lack of transparency in the political process, or the dominance of established political parties.

Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from the government, civil society organizations, and political parties to educate first-time voters, ensure the integrity of the electoral process, and create an environment where all citizens feel motivated and able to participate fully in democratic elections.

Target Audience:

Students of University of Barishal.

Finally, Sincere gratitude to everyone who took part for making this 'Mock Voting Campaign' so effective in Barisal University campus.
