The AIDS Society Of Barbados (AS0B) was established in November, 1990 and is still the oldest NGO in the response to the HIV pandemic in Barbados. It was founded as a community based organisation in response to the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners’ (BAMP) task force on AIDS established in 1985, and the Minister of Health’s National Advisory Committee on AIDS (NACA) established in 19
87. ASOB is open to public membership whereas the other two are not. Dr. Henrick Ellis joined the Task Force in 1986 and became a founding member of NACA in 1987. He invited some of the HIV Educators and Counsellors, and members of the National AIDS Hotline, both of whom he had trained together with members of civil society to form the Society. ASOB's primary objective is to champion the needs, concerns and rights of those Living With and Affected by HIV. Programmes embarked upon over the years include:
-- Mass Education—we established booths all the national festivals of Oistins Fish Festival, Holetown , and Bridgetown Market, while talking to attendees and distributing literature.
-- Additionally we promoted drama (skits), public lectures around the island, in print and electronic media. We established an AIDS Kadooment band. Condom distribution along with Education on Prevention of contracting HIV.
-- Frequent distribution of food items, clothing and school accessories, in conjunction with Bank of Nova Scotia, and the Anglican Men’s Association. Hospital visits and Domiciliary care.
