Empowering Inclusion. Building Capacity. Creating Change.

Last weekend, we completed an important component of the AccessAbility: Pathways to Independence programme, the successful completion of our Train-the-Trainer Workshop.

Presenters for our upcoming sessions were engaged in immersive training led by the Barbados Council for the Disabled . The training covered:

* The Importance of a Fully Accessible Barbados
* Introduction to sign language
* Understanding the Visually Impaired
* Identifying Disabilities
* Lifting & Handling Techniques

We are proud to have these professionals equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver inclusive, impactful sessions.

Beyond the programme, the goal is for this initiative to strengthen capacity within workplaces across Barbados and foster an environment where everyone can thrive. To that end we are pleased to have had representatives from the Human Resource Management Association of Barbados involved in the training.

This is how we move from awareness to action, and action to Independence.

Government’s People Development Third Sector Grant Facility Programme, launched in 2025, is already delivering results.

Providing up to $30,000 to registered third-sector organisations, the grant programme is driving community-based projects focused on empowerment and inclusion.

It supports key areas like education, innovation, health, and youth engagement.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector, Faye Prescod, says the first round of projects is proving what’s possible.

She says civil society organisations are delivering real, measurable impact, with results-driven programmes and strong partnerships between Government and NGOs.

Ms Prescod was speaking at the launch of the Accessibility: Pathways to Independence Programme, led by the Rotary Club of Barbados South.

Through partnerships with national organisations and community leaders, the Pathways to Independence Programme is designed to empower people with disabilities, equipping them with practical skills, building confidence, and opening doors to the workforce.

Ms Prescod says the Ministry remains firmly committed to ensuring inclusiveness across all programmes.

Last week, we launched AccessAbility: Pathways to Independence, a programme designed to empower persons with disabilities with income-generating skills to improve employability and entrepreneurial opportunities. The initiative is funded by the Barbados People Development Unit within the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector, and in partnership with the Barbados Council for the Disabled.

The two month programme will include sessions such as Career Exploration, Résumé Development, Interview Skills, Accessible Agriculture, Workplace Etiquette, and Entrepreneurship, equipping participants with practical tools to successfully navigate the job market

The Rotary Club of Barbados South views this programme as part of a broader, long-term effort to foster inclusive employment pathways and remove barriers to equal opportunity.

March is Rotary Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month 💧

Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene isn’t a luxury, it’s a human right. Yet, 2.5 billion people around the world lack access to improved sanitation. Every day, nearly 1,400 children die from diseases linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation.

Rotarians know that impact goes far beyond infrastructure, we integrate water, sanitation and hygiene into our education, health, and community development
projects. Let’s remember:

🧼 Better hygiene = fewer diseases
🚰 Clean water = healthier lives
📚 Sanitation education = stronger futures

Today, 23 February, we celebrate Rotary Day with Rotarians, friends and partners all around the world.

On this day in 1905, Paul Harris formed the Rotary Club of Chicago and the organisation has evolved ever since to include 1.4 million members who address challenges and champion causes which make the world a better place.

Happy Rotary Day!

Today’s Rotary Model United Nations continued with discussions focussed on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its role in international trade relations.

This topic was particularly appropriate since this month’s Rotary theme is Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution. Participants learned that the WTO doesn’t only set rules for global trade agreements and tariffs between countries, but its deeper purpose was that of international stability which is closely related to peace.

Among those delivering presentations today were Ms Donna Forde, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign, and Ms Nicole Foster, Attorney-at-Law, Law Lecturer, and former diplomat who acted as Counsellor in the Permanent Mission of Barbados to the UN and the WTO in Geneva from 1999 to 2005.

The Rotary Club of Barbados South was addressed at our last club meeting by Mr. Tony Olton, after completion of the first cohort of the club's Social and Emotional Learning Project (SEL).

The SEL project is a joint effort between RCBS and Mr. Olton of the Caribbean Institute for Social and Emotional learning (CiSEL) focused on enhancing emotional intelligence (EQ), at five primary and secondary schools in Barbados. The overall aim is to improve students’ academic performance, relationships, and well-being and ultimately foster a more inclusive and positive school climate.

The project is currently in graduation season, having completed cohort 1 at 2 primary and 3 secondary schools and arrangements are being made for the start of Cohort 2.

February is Peace and Conflict Resolution Month on the Rotary calendar.

As a meaningful expression of our commitment to peacebuilding, several Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Barbados South have committed to completing the Rotary Positive Peace Academy, in partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace.

Because peace isn’t just the absence of conflict, it’s something we actively build, together.

February is Rotary’s Month of Peacebuilding & Conflict Prevention

Rotary is deeply committed to nurturing a more harmonious world. On February 23rd, we celebrate World Understanding and Peace Day, commemorating the very first Rotary club meeting in 1905.

Peace isn’t just the absence of war. It's about tackling the root causes of poverty, inequality, limited access to education, and injustice.

Rotary funds Peace Fellowships that train the next generation of peacemakers to implement grassroots projects that foster dialogue and understanding.

We invite you to be part of the movement for peace. Learn more about Rotary’s peace initiatives, support a local service project, partner with a Rotary club, or consider becoming a member and using your skills to make a meaningful difference. Together, through service and collaboration, we can help build stronger, more peaceful communities.
