Turning Warnings into Action in Belize

When asked about the recent trigger for forecasted drought in Belize, Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon underscored the importance of early action:

💬 “Warnings alone are not enough. Anticipatory Action ensures that vulnerable communities have the means to act early—turning forecasts into real protection.”

By acting ahead of disasters, communities can better protect livelihoods and build resilience before impacts are felt.

What if communities didn’t have to wait for disasters to hit before receiving help?

That’s the idea behind Anticipatory Action—an approach that helps protect people before climate-related disasters strike.

Anticipatory Action uses scientific forecasts and early warning systems to trigger prearranged financing and support ahead of hazards like hurricanes and droughts. Instead of reacting after impact, governments and partners act early to reduce losses and protect lives and livelihoods.

Across the Caribbean, WFP is working closely with governments to turn early warnings into early action—delivering support when it can make the greatest difference.
