Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized millions of Americans for the protection of the planet. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans — 10% of the U.S. population at the time — took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet. The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement and is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event.
Earth Day led to passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. Many countries soon adopted similar laws, and in 2016, the United Nations chose Earth Day as the day to sign the Paris Climate Agreement into force.

Dear delegates,

Welcome to the committee of World Bank Group at the UNEC Model UN New Year Conference.
I would like to introduce myself:
My name is Javad Abasov and I am going to be the Chair of World Bank Group committee. Currently I am a 3rd year student at Finance in Azerbaijan State University of Economics.
I became a MUNer in December of the 2015 at first UNEC MUN Club conference. I remember then I was just in the 10th grade and the MUN conferences were just gaining popularity. Few students at that time knew about the existence of such an interesting platform. Today it is one of the most common and well-known platforms among students in Azerbaijan.
It has been 4 years since my first experience in MUN and during this time, I managed to participate in more than 20 conferences including first National MUN conference in 2016, first BSU MUN conference and second National MUN conference in 2017 etc. In addition, I have been one of the organizers of Model WTO and different MUN conferences in our University. To be honest, I never imagined that I would participate in conferences and represent countries as diplomats, discussing international problems, meeting new people and getting invaluable experience. My decision to “join” is one of the best things that could have happened. I am going to continue to help with participation and organization of MUNs as long as it possible.
Moreover, this is a great chance because our topic is close to my specialty and for me it is a great privilege to observe debates and rule the process of our Committee.
Model United Nations has become the most important event for me in recent years. Active participation in conferences helped me to improve not only my communication and debate skills, networking and negotiating, also it helped me to meet a lot of interesting people and had fun. Each conference gave me more motivation to study and explore different topics from the different sides and enlarge my knowledge that I use on a daily basis. MUN it is an opportunity to study and explore global and local issues deeper, long before you will start studying at the University.
I wish you good luck and now I am very excited and looking forward to getting started.

Dear all, it is time to get acquainted with dais members of MUNEC New Year Conference-2019. And we are starting with the Director of World Bank Group Committee, Madam Urfan Akhmedzada:

Distinguished Delegates,

It is my greatest pleasure and ultimate joy to welcome you all as a director of World Bank committee in UNEC MUN NY Conference!
I am Urfan Ahmadzada, a 3rd year student of Economics at SABAH Center, UNEC. My MUN experience began with becoming a member of UNEC MUN Club in 2017. Since then I have participated in a number of simulation conferences, including MilliMUN, UNECMUN, MUSS, BSUMUN as both an organizer and a delegate. For me, being able to participate in such conferences is a great platform for improving critical thinking, debating, public speaking and analyzing skills. Furthermore, Model United Nations undoubtedly provided me with the broader knowledge of specific topics and gave me a chance to absorb various problems from the distinctive point of view.
In upcoming conference, we will be discussing a topic of World Bank Committee “Supporting financial inclusion and digital economy”. Taking into account the strategic use of financial instruments, such as loans and investment, it can be recognized as a vital success of business. Therefore, with digital technologies underpinning ever more transactions, the digital economy is becoming increasingly inseparable from the functioning of the economy as a whole. Thus, you as delegates of your countries must make a detailed research about challenges and possible solutions regarding this issue basing on your country’s position.
I am looking forward to meeting you all and see fruitful debates in order to reach common resolution, as well as your active participation during Committee work.

Impressions of the venue in Madrid, where governments will take the next crucial steps in the process.

1 December 2019: Speaking to news media one day before the start of the UN Climate Change Conference COP25 in Madrid (2 – 13 December), UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of accelerating climate change impacts and called on governments to demonstrate increased ambition and commitment.

“Today, the world is set to produce 120 per cent more fossil fuels than is consistent with a 1.5-degree pathway. And, for coal, the figure is 280 per cent. But the scientific community is also telling us that the roadmap to stay below 1.5 degrees is still within reach,” he said.

“I strongly hope that COP25 will be able to agree on the guidelines for the implementation of article 6 of the Paris Agreement. That was unfortunately not achieved in Katowice. This agreement will establish a solid basis for international cooperation to reduce emissions and allow for a greater role of the private sector in climate action.”

Who are we?

MUN is an international experience aimed at the development of young people interested in diplomacy, international relations, economics, and other areas. MUN clubs conduct their activities in such leading universities of the world like Harvard, Sorbonne, and Oxford around the world.

Created in 2015, UNEC MUN is one of the official clubs of Azerbaijan Model United Nations Movement, which is supported by UNDP Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan Ministry of the Youth and Sports. Despite of the University's annual MUN conferences, we also actively take part in Azerbaijan MUN Movement conferences, such us MilliMUN and MUN Summer School.
