Soaring Model Society of WA Inc. The Soaring Model Society of WA Inc. promotes RC glider building and flying. Saturdays from 9 AM

The Soaring Model Society of WA club day is Saturday, however when the weather is suitable the club also operates on Tuesday and Thursday. During summer starting times are earlier in the morning before the sea breeze comes in, and in winter flying may not start until the afternoon when thermals start to appear. The club uses the insurance provided by the Australian Miniature Aerosports Society as

it is a lot cheaper and has far fewer terms and conditions than a competing product, and can be purchased online in minutes.

April 18. It was a gorgeous autumn afternoon with a warm sun and gentle breeze. The club shifted to a 1.00 pm start to avoid any lingering showers from the overnight rain, and to allow the air to warm. Some lift was found, but for the main part of the session the air was devoid of any turbulence and made for many enjoyable flights.

April 4. The forecast was for light winds and we were not disappointed as the wind was very light to non existent. This did cause an issue for the Bird of Time as bungee launches were underwhelming and quite low. First flight did not last long. The second flight did achieve extra height and allowed flying to the other side of the park. Some buoyant air was found which turned into lift and resulted in a 10+ minute flight. Brett visited us today with a Bixler which was soon trimmed, and Brett was later flying like a champion.

March 21. A good morning presented itself and a number of members took advantage of it. Rodd flew his Heron and appeared to find some activity. Paul brought along a model called Blue Baby that was constructed not from blue foam, but EPP and Depron. John C flew a small wing but unfortunately had a heavy landing. John then brought out an HLG had many flights. A very nice morning devoid of the strong winds of recent weeks.

March 2. Labour Day long weekend in Western Australia. Yokine Reserve was closed to all flying from Friday to Monday due to a sports carnival. Monday offered the best weather forecast so we thought we would do some model flying at our school site. Ultimately two members made the most of the conditions which provided lift and sink in equal proportions. Rodd was flying his Heron, and the Bird of Time was operating off the bungee. Each made numerous flights until the wind swung from south east to south west around midday and blew the thermals away.

January 24. After a couple of weeks of hot and windy weather, we finally received a cool day with light and variable wind. The wind direction was from all points of the compass and calm at times. Steve was the only one with a glider, and mentioned he could not find any lift. On the next launch, there was lift everywhere and he had to work to bring the glider down.

January 3. The forecast for the day was partially indeterminate from a wind perspective - it was either going to be light or unflyable. Thankfully it was the former and allowed members to enjoy some good conditions. John flew his two foam chuck glider conversions. The red one was quite responsive and kept John on his toes. The Leopard Moth returned after repairs and completed two flights. The Mini Tyro is ever reliable and as the wind was almost calm, spent most flights near ground level. Daniel tried to find lift with his Radian but even though patches of warm air could be felt coming through at ground level, it didn't translate into thermals.

January 1. The forecast winds looked promising with a lull around mid morning. The usual in summer is a strong north-easterly, so any opportunity has to be taken. The Leopard Moth hit a long patch of grass on take off and somersaulted, breaking the cowl and putting an end to it's day. Rodd and Steve enjoyed the conditions and had many flights, with Steve finding some thermal activity. Hopefully this a good omen for the coming year and we are treated to plenty of fine weather and good thermals.

December 6. The conditions were just like the previous week, only the promised breeze held off until well after noon. Thermal activity was a little disappointing for such a nice day, and mostly consisted of little patches and bubbles. As a consequence flights were generally brief. The Harlequin flew well after the left wing was aligned correctly, with no more stalling in left turns. It should perform well in a reasonable thermal.

November 29. The wind at around 9.00 am was a little gusty and turbulent, however it subsided to a nice light breeze in a short time leaving some great flying conditions for electric and bungee gliders. The Bird of Time returned following repairs and the airbrakes proved very effective during landing. Rodd's Orion was performing as usual seeking out thermals. Towards 11.00 am when the wind was expected to increase, it actually dropped to calm and made for some great flying.

November 15. The wind forecast for the day was difficult to pin down as it could have been windy, or quite mild. As it turned out the wind for a couple of hours was light to calm. It did make flying from the bungee hit and miss as the direction was constantly changing. Thermals were completely absent. One part of the forecast was correct in that after 11.00 am the sea breeze came in strongly and ended the session.

November 8. The wind was a mixed bag with periods of near calm and sudden gusts. Rodd brought out his Orion and had one flight. A gust caught the model on landing, and Rodd thought it better to take the model home in one piece instead of tempting fate. The Super Turkey was finding fleeting pieces of lift. The slope soarer wing was fun and completed a lot of flights as it does not stay up very long. The best part of the day was near the end when the ice cream van arrived in the car park to provide some cool refreshment.
