Chimneys! We are asking for photos of chimneys in the local area to include on posters in a window/history room display. Annerley chimneys have been well-covered by member Mark Baker, but there's plenty more out there.

The History Room is open tomorrow, Wednesday 5 August, from 9 am until 12 pm. Come along and have a browse. Local women's suffrage features in the window, there's lots to look at inside, and we are actively recruiting volunteers to assist us in our local history adventures.

Don't forget, we will be closed for the Ekka holiday next week, so get your history fix in while you can. Yeronga Community Centre, entry via Villa St, Yeronga.

Thanks Drs Deborah Jordan and Janis Hanley for their conversation about the interesting and important subject of women's and adults' suffrage in Queensland on Monday evening to an eager audience. We all learnt something new!

In 1894, the Parliament of South Australia passed the landmark Constitutional Amendment (Female Suffrage) Act. This historic law didn’t just give women the right to vote—it also granted them the right to stand for parliament.

This made South Australian women among the very first in the world to gain full political rights, even ahead of Britain and the US.

A momentous triumph led by courageous suffragists like Mary Lee, Catherine Helen Spence, and Elizabeth Webb Nicholls that laid the foundation for modern democracy in Australia! 🇦🇺💪💜
