What an awesome planting event we had on Thursday with a very enthusiastic group of young environmentalists. We would like to thank NAB and the NAB Foundation for generously funding this planting event. NAB is funding six planting events this season, and we're looking forward to making a difference to Yellingbo and the survival of the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeater!

Who am I? What's happening here?

Victoria's parks and reserves would not be healthy or enjoyable to visit without the dedication of Parks Victoria Rangers. A big shout out to Rangers and parks staff everywhere, with special thanks to Simon Dent, PV Ranger at Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area for the work he does with us.

Amongst his many other tasks, Simon took time out to show Sue & Bruce how this habitat restoration site for the Critically Endangered Leadbeater's Possum and Helmeted Honeyeater is progressing. Thank you Simon, and thank you to the businesses whose work has helped get the plants for this project in the ground.

Six Southern Emu-wrens, 4 Rufous Songlarks, 6 Jacky Winters, a Tasmanian Grey Fantail... and so much more, including herding some beautiful, but wayward Speckle Park calves back into their paddock. What makes our Bird & Frog surveys a real treat though is the people (and let's be honest, Robert's baking).

Hard to imagine, perhaps, but true. These images are of the same reserve. We don’t just say it, we believe it. Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area is a special place. At two of our recent citizen science events, we walked through Manna Gum and Swamp Gum vegetation communities, collecting observations on the species present. So peaceful! So beautiful! So deserving of our appreciation and protection.

Dappled sun, no wind, a visit by our favourite Yellingbo Ranger, Robert's rhubarb shortbread slice and great people. What more would you want on our Nature Walk today?

On 9 May the FoHH held an event to commemorate the retirement of Bruce Quin as the Senior Ornithologist on the Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Program - after over 30 years of service and dedication!

Bruce was presented with gifts created by artist and ecologist Linda Bester. He spoke about his time on the swamp,
helping in the survival of the Helmeted Honeyeater. We are extremely grateful for the contribution that Bruce has made in the survival of the critically endangered State Bird emblem! We're looking forward to seeing you helping in the swamp as a volunteer.

We're excited to announce that we have been successful with an Australia Post People of Post Grant!
This grant means we can purchase 4000 new tubes for plants and 400 new crates to hold them in, for our Social Enterprise Nursery. This will help us propagate more plants for our precious Helmeted Honeyeater. Previously we have used funding to host planting events and we're looking forward to using this grant to restock our nursery so we can do more in the future. Thanks to Andrea and the Team from Australia Post !

Great article in The Conversation this morning about the benefits of being involved in citizen science.

Citizen science offers people something simple but powerful: a reason to step outside, pay attention, and reconnect with the living world around them.
