83 years ago today on the 16th May 1943, the US tanker Cities Service Boston hit an offshore reef and suffered propeller damage.
It was a stormy day with big seas.
With the threat of being stranded at sea and open for a Japanese submarine attack, it was decided to run the ship ashore.
The ship hit the rocks at Bass Point and the alert was put out.
Soldiers from the 6th Machine Gun Battalion who were in training at Dapto were called in for the rescue.
With stormy weather and huge seas, the soldiers rescued all 62 crew off the run aground ship.
Unfortunately the soldiers lost 4 of their own. They were Sgt Allan, Pvt Pitt, Pvt Snell and Pvt Simmons.
Today we remember them.

Today marks 83 years since this tradegy.

The Australian Hospital Ship (AHS) Centaur was sunk on Friday 14 May 1943 at 0415k hrs.
Of the ships compliment of 332 only 64 survived, 268 souls were lost including 11 of 12 Army Nurses.
Like all military medical vessels, vehicles and personnel the AHS Centaur was clearly marked as medical.
The Centaur was sailing from Sydney to Cairns when it was torpedoed by Japanese submarine I - 177. The torpedo hit port side oil fuel tank which quickly caught fire, the Centaur sank in minutes allowing little to no time to flee.
This tragic incident was one of far too many atrocities and war crimes in WW2 committed by both Axis and Allied countries. How many peoples lives would of been spared if the AHS Centaur had of made it to the war in the Pacific.
Medics often go into battle with little to no regard for their own safety and treat wounded of both sides. We must remember those who lost their lives in defence of our great nation and all those who have served.
