Could Mount Osmond Golf Club host our April 2027 Golf Day? 👀

As we continue our search for next year’s Golf Day venue, we recently visited Mount Osmond Golf Club to see what it offers.

With its elevated setting, undulating fairways and impressive views across Adelaide, the club certainly has plenty going for it. Its close proximity to the city is another big plus!

A big thank you to Barry Bryant, Course Superintendent, for showing us around the course, and to Damian Wrigley, General Manager, for the warm welcome.

We enjoyed the visit and look forward to exploring possibilities for our 2027 event.

Advocacy Strengthens Support for Sports Turf Apprenticeships on AAPL ✅

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) can inform members that Sports Turf Management has been included on the most recent update to the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List (AAPL), providing access to financial support for eligible employers and apprentices and recognising the importance of developing our industry’s skilled workforce.

The Association has undertaken sustained advocacy for the reinstatement of Sports Turf Management, including submissions, engagement with government and evidence demonstrating the impact of workforce shortages, recruitment challenges and the need to strengthen apprenticeship pathways.

The countdown is on for the annual Golf SA Industry Awards on Saturday 14 November at Morphettville Racecourse, where we’ll discover which TMSA nominee will take home the TMSA Excellence in Turf Management Award!

This award recognises outstanding achievement in golf course turf management, celebrating excellence in course presentation, innovation, environmental stewardship, leadership and commitment to advancing the profession.

The winner will represent TMSA in the Excellence in Golf Course Management category at the ASTMA National Turf Industry Awards in June 2027.

While up in the picturesque Adelaide Hills recently, we visited Blackwood Golf Club and caught up with Course Superintendent Steve Pellatt for a look around the course.

Set amongst peaceful bushland, Blackwood is one of the Adelaide Hills’ most picturesque and well-established golf courses, with abundant wildlife and a reputation for excellent course conditioning.

After our visit, we can certainly see why!

Thanks to Steve for taking the time to show us around and share what goes into maintaining this beautiful course.

Who wouldn’t be inspired to explore a career in turf management with these three smiling ambassadors ready to share their knowledge and experience?

On Thursday, we caught up with John Cranwell, Leading Hand Turf W**d & Pest Control at the City of Adelaide and TMSA Committee member; Tim Warren, Course Superintendent at Glenelg Golf Club and TMSA President; and Chris McCulloch, ASTMA SA Training Manager.

Chris was also on hand to talk students through the ASTMA Diploma of Sports Turf Management pathway, as well as the Certificate II and III in Sports Turf Management – key entry-level qualifications for those starting their journey in the industry.

It was the first time TMSA and ASTMA have partnered at the annual Urrbrae High School Career Expo to promote the many career opportunities in turf management.

With busloads of students arriving throughout the day, it’s one of the busiest events on the calendar – and hopefully a few of those curious faces will go on to build careers in the industry.

John Cranwell is proof of what’s possible, having once been a Urrbrae student himself.
