Today Brooklyn Recycling Group had the opportunity to present at the Centre for Safe Air seminar at Environment Protection Authority Victoria Docklands office, speaking to an audience of researchers, government representatives and policy makers about Victoria's first Better Environment Plan (BEP).
Our presentation focussed on how a partnership of businesses operating within the Brooklyn Industrial Precinct is working collaboratively with government, regulators and community to address air quality and amenity challenges in one of Victoria's most industrialised precincts.
While environmental improvements often take time, our experience shows that trust, transparency, consistency and ongoing engagement are essential foundations for change.
Some of the outcomes we've achieved through the BEP include:
✅ Delivering coordinated dust suppression and environmental improvement actions across the precinct
✅ Hosting regular stakeholder meetings that bring together businesses, community representatives, regulators and government agencies
✅ Delivering community clean-up and revegetation events with more than 65 volunteers, resulting in 100kg of litter removed and 700 seedlings planted
✅ Supporting the removal of approximately 80 feral goats from the Kororoit Creek corridor, helping protect revegetation efforts that have been impacted for more than 15 years
✅ Advocating for improved precinct amenity, including increased investment in unsealed roads to help reduce dust generation
One of the key messages from today's presentation was that lasting environmental improvement requires collaboration. When businesses, government, researchers and community work together, positive outcomes can be achieved that extend well beyond the original scope of a project.
Thank you to the Centre for Safe Air for the opportunity to share the Brooklyn story and contribute to the discussion on improving air quality outcomes for Victorian communities.
