๐ŸŒฟ World Wetlands Day | An Evening of Possibility ๐ŸŒฟ

Wetlands are some of the most life-rich ecosystems on Earth โ€” places where plants, birds, insects and water come together in extraordinary ways. Theyโ€™re also among the most impacted by urbanisation.

To mark World Wetlands Day, West Footscray Library is hosting a special evening with Gio Fitzpatrick, an award-winning naturalist and ecological designer.

Gio specialises in restoring nature in heavily modified, multi-use spaces. His current project is the transformation of the former Elsternwick Golf Course into the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve โ€” turning manicured fairways into habitat for native plants and wildlife.

In this talk, Gio will share the fascinating stories of wetland life, what makes these ecosystems thrive, and how even small urban spaces โ€” parks, streets, and backyards โ€” can be re-imagined to support living systems. Itโ€™s a hopeful invitation to imagine what might be possible here in the west.

๐Ÿšš Truck traffic on Williamstown Road, Yarraville and Millers Road, Brooklyn is projected to DOUBLE and TRIPLE, respectively, when the West Gate Tunnel Project opens...

๐Ÿ’ฐ For Labor to spend $10 BILLION on this project, allegedly to get trucks off residential streets, and leave so many people worse off - in terms of diesel pollution, noise, safety - is an EPIC FAILURE.

๐Ÿ˜ท To have 30-metre trucks rattling down suburban streets, with bedrooms just a few metres away, shows a reckless disregard for public safety and health.

๐Ÿซถ We urge the Victorian Government to do better.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Local voices wanted! A new community project is starting at Braybrook and Maidstone Neighbourhood House to help our neighbourhoods prepare for challenges like power outages, extreme weather, and food security. Theyโ€™re inviting locals to join a short-term working group to share ideas and help shape real solutions. If you care about our communityโ€™s wellbeing, this is a great way to get involved.
---

Letโ€™s prepare for the future, together.

Neighbourhood Houses already do amazing work bringing people together and supporting their communities. Resilience In-House is a project designed to build on that strength: helping Houses and their communities prepare for climate challenges, so we can flourish now and ongoing.

Weโ€™re inviting locals like you to be part of this because your ideas and local knowledge are invaluable.

Join the Braybrook and Maidstone Neighbourhood House Resilience In-House Working Group

Work with others from your community to shape practical, local solutions. No special skills or experience needed; just a willingness to listen, share, and take action. Youโ€™ll help:
Identify what matters most to your community
Co-create an action plan for your Neighbourhood House
Find ways to build on existing work
Track progress and share what works

Why This Matters

Weโ€™re all facing bigger challenges. From extreme weather to power outages to food security. But we also know that communities that are connected, prepared and adaptable cope better and recover faster. This project is about making those strengths even stronger, with practical actions that fit your community.

Whatโ€™s involved?

Through workshops and ongoing engagement, working group members will contribute at up to 6 sessions over 2 months, around 12 hours total. The sessions will run from late October to early December 2025.

We are so disappointed that the Victorian Government is refusing to install filters on the West Gate Tunnel.

The tunnel's two vents located in - at Whitehall Street and near Fogarty Avenue - will pump toxic truck fumes into the air near homes and sporting fields.

Given the $10 billion price tag of this project (so far), we are surprised the government has failed to take adequate steps to protect people's health.

Climate Action Maribyrnong, Brimbank Sustainability and Climate Action, and Parents For Climate West Melbourne, three groups of local community members concerned about climate change - have left a community consultation process with local MP Daniel Mulino in despair following the governmentโ€™s approval of three thermal coal mine expansions, allowing them to operate for another 30-40 years. https://www.abc.net.au/.../federal-government.../104391416

These extensions will supercharge climate change by locking in approximately 1.5 billion tonnes of lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, more than three times Australiaโ€™s total annual emissions.

Angela Ashley-Chiew said:

โ€œWe joined the climate consultation process with Daniel Mulino in good faith, but it looks a lot like lip service when you see Minister Tanya Plibersek signing off on new coal projects.

โ€œIf the Albanese Government is really serious about tackling climate change, it needs to stop approving the main cause of itโ€”the mining and burning of coal, oil, and gas.

Fossil fuels โ€“ coal, oil and gas โ€“ are by far the largest contributor to global climate change, accounting for over 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions.

Climate Action Maribyrnong Group, Brimbank Sustainability & Climate Action and Parents For Climate - West Melbourne were invited to have regular meetings about Australiaโ€™s progress on climate and environment issues with Daniel Mulino.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been pleased to see the Albanese Governmentโ€™s progress on the adoption of clean solutions to climate, such as renewable energy, but without a commitment to the fast and fair phase out of coal and gas, itโ€™s rearranging deck chairs while the Titanic sinks.

โ€œWe really appreciate having an open and straightforward relationship with Daniel Mulino but it feels like a shot in the foot when the government steamrolls those discussions by approving coal and gas developments.โ€

The federal government says the extensions will secure the jobs of more than 1,800 workers, but the move has angered environmentalists who have described the decision as "the opposite of climate action".
