An update on Thriving Kids -

Thriving Kids is starting to be rolled out. The important message is that not much changes today.

Here are three key things families need to know:

🔹Children aged 0-8 who are already NDIS participants (or who join before 1 January 2028) continue receiving NDIS support under current eligibility criteria
🔹 Thriving Kids has two parts: family support and targeted allied health support
🔹 Supports in childcare, kindergarten and school are not changing

The Australian government is inviting school students in Years 5 and 6 to send in their artwork to become part of a projection onto the front of Australian Parliament House.

On display from 26 February to 8 March 2027 during Canberra’s Enlighten Festival 2027, it will showcase children’s artworks from across Australia and help celebrate 100 years of Parliament in Canberra.

If you are a student in year 5 or 6, show them what makes your corner of Australia special. Show the people, places, plants, animals and landscapes that inspire you and make you feel connected to your place, your home and your community. You could see your creativity become part of a spectacular projection on Australian Parliament House in Canberra.

The Submission deadline is: 5pm Thursday 29 October 2026

The Disability Events Community is excited to be heading back to Werribee in 2026 for the second annual Werribee Community Disability Expo!

And once again we are there in the middle of it.

This free community event is designed to connect people living with disabilities, their families, guardians, support workers and disability providers.

The expo will feature local disability providers, like us, ready to answer your questions, share insights, and provide services to support you with everyday life.

The first 200 people on the day will also receive a free barista made coffee, tea or hot chocolate too.

In the Laverton Community Hub today between 10am and 12:30pm is a free event, with keynote speaker, sausage sizzle and activities too.

The Government has opened consultation on the proposed NDIS access changes.

The government says these proposed changes aim to make access decisions clearer, fairer and more consistent. They focus on how disability affects everyday life.

Your feedback will help the Technical Advisory Group for NDIS functional capacity develop advice for the Government.

You can share your thoughts on the proposed changes to NDIS access until 11.59pm AEDT on Friday 2 October 2026.

📢 NDIS Reform Update: What the Recent Changes Mean for Participants

The Australian Government has now passed the NDIS Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Bill 2026, introducing a number of reforms aimed at improving sustainability, strengthening safeguards, and reducing fraud within the NDIS.

We understand that any changes to the NDIS can create uncertainty, so we want to share some key information and provide reassurance to our community.

✅ What Has Changed?

The reforms include: 📋

• New anti-fraud and provider integrity measures
• Stronger powers to address unethical provider behaviour
• Enhanced protections for whistleblowers
• Changes to future eligibility and assessment arrangements from 2028
• Additional safeguards for participants with very high support needs

❓Are Current Participants Being Removed from the NDIS Right Now?

No.

The legislation does not automatically remove current participants from the NDIS. Existing participants continue to have access to the Scheme, and important review and appeal rights remain in place.

However, future planning decisions, plan reviews, and funding decisions may increasingly consider factors such as sustainability and equity across the Scheme.

🏡 What About Participants with High Support Needs?

The final version of the legislation includes additional protections for participants who require significant daily support, including people who need continuous or 24-hour care.

New pathways have been created to seek plan variations where a participant's health or safety may be affected.

🗓️ What Happens Next?

Some of the most significant proposed changes, including the new functional capacity assessment framework, are not scheduled to commence until 1 January 2028. The Government has indicated there will be further detail and consultation before these changes take effect.
