When a group of Kashmiri Pandits came to him with a "Plea to the Beacon of Hope," facing forced conversion and tyranny, the Guru didn't ask about their background. He didn't ask if they would become Sikhs. He simply stepped forward to protect their fundamental human right: Freedom of Conscience.
He was arrested, caged in a vessel of spikes, and given three choices: convert, show a miracle, or die. He refused to trade his conscience for his life.
Alongside his three brave companions—Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, and Bhai Dyala Ji—who were tortured and martyred before his eyes, the Guru gave his head to protect the rights of others.
