Today is a good day to reflect on where we have been, and how far we have come. The theme this year for International Day of Persons with disabilties is fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.

When I think back to when I did my nursing qualifications, many people with disabilities were institutionalised and segregated from society. Since then, there have been so many changes to inclusion for people with disabilities. But we still have a way to go - from changing ableist attitudes, to inclusion of people with disabilities to make choices to become parents and be supported to do so.

Every year, this day is good to reflect on the steps we have each taken over the year to make our society more inclusive. Thank you to all of you who take little and big steps to fostering inclusion.

Congratulations to Jess Baxter on her award! Another great midwife supporting parents with disabilities at DMC Support and in the Northern NSW Local Health District.

We are so excited that one of our midwives has been awarded the 'Midwife of the Year' Award for the Northern NSW Local Health District.

Jess works tirelessly to support women and families in their pregnancy, birth and parenting journey. We have been fortunate to have Jess working with us at DMC Support to provide support and guidance to mothers and partners in their transition to parenthood. Jess is highly regarded by our community of families and staff.

Introducing Jess:
My name is Jess and I am excited to join the team at DMC Support. I have had the privilege of being a midwife for over 15 years. I love empowering women with disabilities through compassionate care. I am a midwife who specialises in providing personalised support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. I am passionate about advocating for inclusive practices and accessible healthcare, ensuring every woman feels heard, respected, and empowered. I am committed to fostering a safe and nurturing environment. Helping women with the right education allows them to navigate their birthing journey with confidence, dignity, and joy. Women’s strength is always inspirational and together, we can celebrate the miracle of new life!

Sad to hear this news of Dr Odent's passing. His views and research on birthing women changed the practice of so many midwives, and empowered the voices of women in the birthplace.

We are so sorry to hear this news from Michel Odent's family.

"It is with great sorrow that the family of Dr Michel Odent announce his death at the age of 95. Dr Odent was born July 7, 1930, in Bresles, France. He died peacefully in London, England, on August 19, 2025 following a brief illness.

Dr Odent trained as a general surgeon in Paris, and advocated for the demedicalisation of birth whilst in charge of Pithiviers Hospital. In later life, he founded the Primal Health Research Centre in London, and published extensively on topics related to childbirth and early breastfeeding.

He is survived by many loved ones, including his partner Liliana, and children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family wishes to express their thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to La Leche League. Dr Odent will be cremated in a private family service with a public memorial to follow in several weeks."
