In 2001, to celebrate the Centenary of Federation, the Queensland Government provided financial assistance to the Killarney and District Historical Society Inc. to enable it to commemorate sites in Yangan, Emu Vale, Danderoo, Tannymorel, Mount Colliery, and The Head that were deemed to be important to the region at the time of federation. This was done by installing bronze plaques mounted on aluminium posts at sixty selected locations.
The process of identifying the sites and installing the plaques was known as the Federation Marker Project, and an accompanying ‘Location and Brief History of Sites Marked with Federation Plaques’ booklet is available for purchase from the Killarney Heritage Centre.
Some of the sites are still recognisable today; others are identifiable by their bronze plaques; and a few are now missing their plaques and can only be identified using the Southern Downs and Granite Belt Visitor App or the maps in the Federation Plaques booklet.
The Yangan to Mount Colliery Heritage Trail takes in the first half of the sites identified for the Federation Marker Project, plus several additional places that have since been determined to be important to the area's history and heritage.
Many thanks to Ivan Hancock from Killarney for being a driving force in reinvigorating everything the Federation Marker Project continues to offer our community.
