Corridors for Carnabys The population of Carnabys cockatoos has more than halved since the 1970s from loss of habitat and food sources due to clearing for farming and development.

The Corridors For Carnabys program is designed to help save these iconic birds from extinction.

WANT TO HELP? SEND US YOUR CARNABYS VIDEOS!

As well as providing vitally needed native food sources for Carnabys, this project also has some critically needed research objectives.

We need to better understand the distribution, number and behaviour of Carnabys, on a species, regional, flock and individual bird level AND how this varies between seasons and years.

So we are asking you to send us your videos!

This link allows you to instantly record and upload videos from your phone when you see our feathered friends, as well as upload previously recorded videos.

With enough videos, tagged with time and location, we can start to unravel some of the critical knowledge needed to get the best outcomes for Carnabys.

We look forward to the arduous task of coming through hours of footage of these adorable birds. Such a hard job!😉

Videos will also be used to train the Artificial Intelligence models we are developing. If you are concerned about the use of your videos, know that these are targeted, specialised AI models designed to be run locally on your phone or computer once developed.

The actual number varies between less than 50 (B. attenuata / Candlestick Banksia to over 1,000 (B. ilicifolia / Holly-Leaved Banksia) depending on seed size, nutritional content and 'foraging efficiency' of the cockatoos.

The 50,000 banksias we planted this year are all B. attenuata or B. menziesii (Firewood or Strawberry Banksia) as these species provide the most food per plant for cockatoos of the banksias native to this region,

AND

are the most widespread and common varieties naturally occurring in the Banksia Woodlands of the Swan Coastal Plain (the Threatened Ecological Community that once covered most of the land from Jurian Bay to Dunsborough) but is now mostly cleared).

Did you know that our glorious feathered friends are mostly left-footed? Over 80% of them in fact!

And as you go from cockatoos down to smaller parrots, they show less and less foot preference?

It's thought that the larger birds of the parrot family evolved this preference for dexterity to eat larger seeds and nuts they eat compared with the smaller birds.

OK, so not all of our seedling get quite this much love and affection. But it's great to see the team from Natural Area enjoying the work!

The auger is fantastic in the soft, sandy soils that these banksias love.
