Australian Pig Doggers and Hunters Association Australian Pig Doggers and Hunters Association Unfortunately, over recent years, the ethics of this form of hunting have often come into question.

Responsible, law abiding hunters using disciplined well trained dogs is one of a number of useful tools in the ongoing effort to control feral pig populations across Australia. Correctly done, it is extremely effective, particularly in thick country by not only capturing pigs for humane despatch, but also by tending to disperse those not caught into more open country where shooting, for example, e

njoys increased effectiveness. Contrary to popular misconception and, in some cases, propaganda, the use of well trained dogs to locate and either bail or hold pigs is far more humane than some other methods of control in use. In addition, well trained pig dogs are species specific, being rigorously trained to ignore animals other than pigs. To address these issues, hunters from around Australia came together to establish a national body representing people who hunt with dogs. The Australian Pig Doggers and Hunters Association (APDHA) was incorporated in mid 2005.with its major focus being to improve the image of hunters using dogs for feral pig control by promoting humane and ethical hunting hunting practices. This is occurring through member compliance with our Code of Conduct, education of both members and the general public as well as implementation of initiatives against those hunters without respect for the law or landholders, the poachers. The APDHA also lobbies all levels of Government on legislation concerning hunting and dog ownership as well as being a united voice for responsible hunters through its committee. We have built a good relationship with the Department of Primary Industries QLD and NSW and NT Parks. We have also forwarded submissions to various government departments, animal welfare advisory committees and research bodies promoting the harvesting and control of feral pigs with dogs. The APDHA accepts members Australia wide and Provides $20 million in public liability insurance, membership cards that can be checked against drivers licences, regular newsletter, promotions and various discounts to its members. Membership fees will be on a sliding scale with an annual fee of $80 for full membership and discounts for juniors and those on pensions. As we grow our aim is to have a committee member in every State and Territory representing hunters in those areas.

More pig bounty media…

13/06/2026

There is a bit to digest with the news today that the NSW Nationals have adopted the pig bounty concept of between $20 and $50 a pig as part of their election platform.
There are other elements to the pig control plan but we will focus today on the bounty idea which has already been supported by us, NSW Farmers, the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party and NSW Independent MPs.
Following is the full text of the bounty section of the five point pig policy statement.

“Pilot bounty scheme.
We will work with farmers and key stakeholders to establish a Pilot scheme, developed to deliver real outcomes in conjunction with other control methods, to keep pressure on pig numbers through authorised hunting.
A NSW feral pig bounty scheme will operate as a tightly controlled 24-month pilot in high-impact regional areas, targeting severe agricultural and environmental damage. Registered hunters, landholders and approved pest controllers will receive a verified payment per pig, between $20–$50, with strict compliance measures such as GPS-tagged photos, landholder consent and physical verification.
The scheme will work alongside existing aerial shooting, trapping and 1080 baiting programs and include private land, Crown land, state forests and national parks where authorised. Administration will be coordinated through Local Land Services, with the trial assessed against reductions in pig numbers, farm damage and overall cost effectiveness before any broader rollout.”

Our response:
We will argue that the APDHA it is a key stakeholder.
We will look for $50 a pig for pigs taken under the compliance measures suggested.
We will seek the highest security for any GPS info on catches to protect private property security.
We will argue for LLS support of sanctioned and locally managed pig comps, perhaps via insurance for weigh-in venues etc (now costing local committees between $2000 and $3000 for each event).
We will seek to act as liaison between the LLS and hunters to help avoid any cultural misunderstandings.
We will ask for hunters at the very least be given some relief from the new gun laws so shooters can be equipped to do the job.
We will ask for a review of the Local Government Act which bizarrely lists hunting dogs as dangerous.

We will also take further suggestions from our members and others if we’ve missed something.
We have argued for a bounty for some time, backed a successful trial involving our members and the Tottenham branch of NSW Farmers and spent a lot of time and money gathering and presenting data on the effectiveness of pig hunting so we are very invested in this debate.

If you want to be actively involved in this debate, join us. We are almost there…

The NSW Nationals have reportedly announced plans to offer a bounty for pigs if part of the next State Government.
We will chase more details but, if true, the decision is the first by a major party to accept the advice of NSW Farmers and the APDHA to make a bounty policy.
The SFF Party and some Independents have already supported the concept but the Nats move is the first by a party that is a real chance of being part of a NSW State Government.

More details as we get them.

The recent big news surrounding the removal from the environment of 4064 pigs in 60 hours (that’s 1.13 pigs a minute) thanks to hunters taking part in competitions at Mungindi and Ivanhoe has another positive impact for the bush.
Two important groups raising awareness about mental health issues in regional Oz, Are You Bogged Mate? and The Black Dog Institute, will benefit financially from funds raised and in credibility terms by being involved at ground level with men and women who spend as much time as they can as far away from the city limits as possible.
Mental ill health can be a killer and there is courage in looking for help for the long term benefit of yourself and your family.
Sascha Estens’ film is a must see.

⚠️ Warning. If you hit play on this film, just be ready for impact. This is what rural mental health can look like. It's raw, confronting, deeply human and immensely courageous. You can help normalise these experiences for individuals and their families by sharing George and Lan’s story, or by...

Some good reading in The Land on line today. First up is a great report on the Mungindi and Ivanhoe pig comps and the 4062 pigs wiped out in 60 hours at the weekend.
Second is a report on the free grain on offer to land managers to trap pigs running out at the end of this month. That one has opened the door for the APDHA to invite landholders to use our hunters to fill the gap.
APDHA members have invested in their management team to raise the positive profile of hunters and tell the good news on hunting and it is paying off.
For the past two years we have achieved a massive turnaround in the perception of pig hunting, built a fantastic data base and collected a library full of positive news stories thanks to the support of members who have added to the numbers and the volume of the people we represent.
Some of our members have been on board for decades and others joined yesterday but every member counts as we work to secure a future for our culture in a rapidly changing world.
Well done hunters and thanks for your trust.

If you’ve been thinking about joining or rejoining us, no better time than right now.

🐗 Every pig counts.

When it comes to controlling feral pig numbers, every tool available should be on the table and that includes pig hunting competitions.

Events like the Hotel Euramo's Boar and Barra Bash do more than bring hunters together. They help remove destructive pests from the landscape, encourage knowledge sharing, support local communities and keep the conversation going about practical feral animal control.

Too often, recreational hunters are overlooked despite spending countless hours and their own money helping protect farms, waterways and native habitats.

There is a strong case for greater government support for hunting competitions as a way to complement formal pest control programs and bridge the gaps between large-scale control operations.

The people on the ground are already doing the work. Why not back them?

What more do communities need to do to have their work in feral pig management recognised? At the weekend Mungindi and Ivanhoe pig competition organisers oversaw the destruction of 4064 feral pigs by hunters, from Friday morning until Sunday lunch time. The pig catching comp absolutely underlines the capacity of managed and motivated hunters to play a major role in co-ordinated control methods. And yet, we can't get any interest from those charged with the (well paid) responsibility to get our pig plague under control.
We have created a public service culture that is so risk averse, the focus on feral pigs takes a back seat to staying within well worn (ie safe) methodology lest a risk taker be punished for stepping out of line.
That's the limiting factor in feral pig management Australian wide.
Control strategy conservatism is never about managing animal welfare. Everyone who has used 1080 or followed a chopper shoot knows that.
It's never about law and order just ask the many rural police who join with pig comp organisers to communicate with competitors in the field and on the roads and report extraordinarily high levels of compliance.
It is always about reluctance of our elected administrators to risk offending an urban voter base and the public service reluctance to risk offending elected administrators.
Let's get passed that and back the competition culture and watch those pig numbers drop.
